Gaminglect

I like the theme because it instantly tells me what the forum is about. However, I think it is a bit too dark for me, I have to look up a bit close to see the forum. I like the layout, shouldn't you put news and announcements at the top of the forum?, so where people can see it and know what is going on. The staff balance is perfect for the size of the forum IMO, 1 admin and 2 super mods are great. Have you thought of promoting the forum on social media?

I quite the logo, because it matches the icons on the forum. I think you should have an introduction section because it helps people know who they are and have a hot seating thing so people get to know other members well. But I wouldn't count it as a post though. Have you thought of doing a contest where the winner, gets I don't know 20 pounds of Microsoft points or things like that? I would also add email activation to make sure that you don't get bots on the forum and to know whether your members are real or not.

I love the games section because it gives you an impression of what your forum is about and tells me that there is something else to do on the forum, other than talking. If you keep adding new games to it then it will become a fantastic feature on the forum. I wish you every success on the forum, I have signed up to your forum BTW. I will be posting later on. Good luck.

Hey, I appreciate the quick response! If I may, I'll address a few points:

1. It depends on your monitor. I can see it just fine. If certain areas are too dark, then I could possibly give them a slightly lighter alternative.

2. I originally had the announcements up top, but you've got a point that it's fine to be up there.

3. For now, it's just two administrators and one moderator. We all share the same color, so people know who's a staff member.

4. I've thought about promoting on social media, but I decided against that. When I tried promoting my other forum on those places, I had very little success. Most people on social media aren't really into forums, so I'm primarily targeting people who are at least moderately interested in the medium.

5. I really appreciate your compliments. Also, every time you refresh, the banner changes!

6. We have a main thread for introducing members here. I don't feel that most introduction threads are necessary, since they're usually quite typical and vague. Not saying that to discourage prospective members, but we prefer to focus more on our main subject.

7. An actual contest would be fun, actually. On the other hand, I'd feel that people would simply join for the added benefits, having very little to do with actually being a forum member. I can understand the positive aspects of the idea, but I don't think that we'd really benefit from it. We'll have to wait and see.

8. We never seem to have a spam issue on either of my forums, but I'll go ahead with adding e-mail verification.

9. That's great to hear! I would've added even more games, but not all of them were created equal. I chose some of the better ones to end up on there. Feel free to recommend me more.

10. Many thanks for your kind words regarding the forums, and I'm happy to know that we've convinced you to join! Lurk around as often as you'd like. Our setup is simple, yet very effective. I believe in a forum where quality triumphs quantity, and where drama queens better look elsewhere! A nice and friendly environment for like-minded people who joined for one reason: gaming!

First Impressions
At first glance, I'm not impressed. The forum lacks in various areas from design quality to originality. A few areas of text are extremely hard to read as there is black text over a dark blue background. I'll cover more about that in more detail below. I chose to do this review because I'm a gamer. That being said, I'm very disappointed at what I see upon first taking a look.

As you read through this content, please remember that this is just the somewhat professional opinion of one individual. All advice given are merely suggestions or comments to help you improve your site.

Design Quality
The design of your forum is severely lacking. For starters, each of the individual forum banners (or logos) is of terrible quality. They are either pixelated or extremely blurry. Either way, they're not very appealing. I would tell you which ones I like specifically, but it seems as though your site has some severe loading issues going on right now as I'm writing this review.

As far as the colors go, I like the blues and grays. Though, I think the link colors of the board's names would be better as a light blue color as you're over using the gray. Also, the mark as read and forum team links are hard to read when you hover over them.

When you go to a board and scroll to the bottom, the shortcut "Go" bar for thread list ordering is extremely hard to read. The text that is displayed is shown in black on a dark blue background. The only way to see the text is to be on top of the screen or to select an option from the drop down menu.

The rest of the text on the forum is also hard to read. That statement is especially true for board names and descriptions on the main forum layout. The text is small and seems washed out. It's not very engaging or attractive by any means.

The new/old icons aren't impressive either. The only one that seems to look decent is the "Redirect" icon shown in the icon legend towards the bottom of the board.

Honestly, after reading the following part of a post an administrator made about the forum having a domain, I am very disappointed with the sites design. Here's a quote:
It is with great pleasure that I announce that Gaminglect has finally secured itself a domain name! Thanks to the help of our fellow forum members and staff, I was convinced to take the next big step by turning a throwaway Web site into a professional forum.
Note the word "professional." There is nothing professional about this forum's design or structure. It looks like someone took a very default theme and threw their logo and icons onto the page. The icons for the boards are very choppy around the edges, and it is noticeable over the dark background.

My suggestions for the design quality:
- Have someone create you a unique and excellent theme for your forum. Or, simply, do it yourself.
- If using dark colors, try to avoid using dark text on dark backgrounds. It makes the text extremely hard to read.
- Make sure your site emphasizes creativity. By this, I only mean to make your icons and graphics both unique and exclusive to the niche in which your forum is about.
- Find someone to create a logo for you that doesn't wash out with the background. A "professional" logo doesn't look pixelated or contain rough edges. It's not blurred, nor does it look washed out.
- Use some colors. Honestly, the colors you've chosen for links, text, and the like, are so boring and dull that I'm immediately turned off from your forum and not interested in joining based on the site's design alone.

Very Poor

Originality
The originality of this forum severely lacks as well. The unique thing that I've noticed about the forum is the rotating banner/logo on page load. That's neat. As far as the structure of the boards goes, almost all general gaming forums contain every board you've listed and nothing else. Your board's content isn't creative, unique, or original which is unprofessional for a site that's trying to be fruitful and professional. Those new/old icons are the most widely used video game controllers on the web.

You need to remove some boards and add boards that will make your forum stand out from other general gaming discussion forums. The theme isn't original at all and needs a lot of work.

Very Poor

Final Remarks
Honestly, your site needs some extensive work done to it. The design needs a lot of work and your forum needs to have more originality in order to make it stand out from other forums of its niche. Please do not take offense to anything in this review. I know it may seem like I'm being harsh, but I don't want to sugar coat anything as it won't help you or your forum. I wish you luck!

Thanks for your feedback. Personally, I think the theme and banners look good, and content will come once we have more members and have exhausted the basic discussions that appear elsewhere on other forums. At the end of the day, it's the people that make one forum different from the next.

Your site looks to be off to a pretty good start. That logo text has way too many colors for your theme on it. Something like a red or even a white text would look a lot better and help it "blend in" with your theme. The next thing I see is you don't (or maybe I'm just missing it) have is any sort of welcome section. Making your members feel welcome is something vital to keeping them around; and I'd highly recommend you add a welcome section.

Best of luck with your forum. 🙂

Thanks to you for your feedback, as well.

We do have a central thread for welcoming new members, which is under General Discussion. It's understandable to include a separate forum for that, but we intend to make the community more focused on the niche. From personal experience, I've seen so many people make only one post and leave right after. I'm personally more interested in individuals with some interesting things to say. I'd get more out of a forum with all ten members who always bring up interesting subjects than a quarter of the community doing the same thing.

I appreciate the helpful advice given so far.

I think you're off to a good start here. The theme is kind of bland, but it reminds me of the old indigo colored Gamecubes - so I like it. 🙂

I like your rotating banner. It's original.

One question I had was in the PC gaming forum description it says talk about PC gaming: DOS, Amiga, Commodore 64, Apple. What games were developed for the Commodore and Apple exclusively? I think you're better off coming with a creative description for that one.

Also, in the Handheld gaming forum description I think you have room to spell out Gameboy and Nintendo DS. This might add some depth to your site.

The theme is a bit too dark, but otherwise is pretty good. The rotating banner is an overall nice feature and allows for you to showcase all your logos/branding in a manner than makes your site feel crisp and fresh.

In terms of improving the theme you use, I would lighten it up a bit.

We agreed to keep the theme simple and effective. I appreciate your kind words about our rotating banners!

As far as games developed for those systems, a quick Google search will show you a scrollable list of games for each of them. Also, I meant to refer to the Apple II, which has games dating back to the 1970s. I'll spell out the Game Boy and Nintendo DS in a bit.

Many thanks for your helpful feedback.

I got you. I wanted you to tell me just so I knew you did your research. 🙂

Not a huge fan of your theme. It looks plain, boring and looks like those outdated themes for myBB that were released 3-4 years ago. There are many free modern looking themes so I would suggest going for one of them. The first thing that I thought was - Is this a PlayStation discussion forum or general gaming? It's confusing because your logo has the PS logo on it whereas your forum sections suggests its for all gaming discussions. I would suggest your redesign your logo with a controller maybe.

Content is very important and I think that you need to keep posting new content as alot of your forums havn't been posted in for a while

We are a general gaming forum. Refreshing will always rotate our banners. We will be sticking with our current theme, which I personally customized.

As far as content goes, we're only two weeks in. Content is not defined by massive post count.

Oh just noticed the logo thing. That's quite cool actually. Its not about the amount of content, its the fact that some of your forums havn't been posted in for a couple of days
