I can already see the things people might say. 😛

Every software known to man usually has the whole "Gender" field in their profile settings somewhere, however they only have "Male" and "Female" with the occasional "other" however there have been debates over whether or not softwares, let alone forum owners, should add "Transgender" to the list as the topic continues to trend in news stories. So the question is, does "other" cover Transgender, or do you think you should add that as a gender along with the traditional male/female fields?

And please keep this nice. 😛

I heard that this has been discussed at some places, but I've never really put thought in it. For me it's more important to have a choice not to specify your gender, but adding an 'others' option might be a nice gesture of respect and tolerance to those who feel that this is relevant to them. I don't know about specifying details, though. There are a LOT of variations in the whole gender spectrum. Maybe a fill-in-the-blank space that pops up when you choose 'others' would do?

Then again I've never personally felt the need for it, so I don't know how those who do feels. It'd be nice to hear other viewpoints.

I have never thought about doing a fill in the blank field for gender fields, that's a brilliant idea though. 😱

Transgenders... don't they usually want to be a particular gender anyway? Whether if it 's a case of a boy wanting to be girl or girl wanting to be a boy don't they claim one gender typically anyway?

I don't know anyone personally to speak from experience but this is my understanding of it.

On my forum there is the regular m/f, but there are also selections for "other" and "private". I think that covers it for now but I like the idea of a text field box so people can write what they want.

We have an option for either Male, Female or Other. I just don't see many transgender people joining the forum and if they did I doubt they would want to put that up on their forum profile in case they are scared of get bullied or harassed online.

Though it might make trying to get a demographic data on a site's member base really messy though. I can imagine myself using the fill-in-the-blank field to write stuff like spaghetti or mountain peacocks. I don't know.

On another note I might have gotten gender identities and sexual orientations mixed up, so I still don't really know how pressing having more options than female, male, others, and not specified is.

I generally just use "Male", "Female", or "Other". I really don't want to get caught up in all the "Other" genders that people use now days. 😛

Like what Sharon said, it's typical that transgenders would identify as the gender that they see themselves as.

For those who identify with neither of the two common genders, we also have an option that allows you to simply not disclose it.

Problem solved.

If its transgender, wouldn't they just pick the male or female option anyway? Seeing as if its a man wanting to be a woman, wouldn't he pick that he was female?

I personally think the option 'other' covers the transgender audience. I don't think there's a need to actually physically add it seperately. 😛

I may be catastrophically wrong here, so forgive me, but wouldn't Caitlyn Jenner for example choose "Female?" If not, I think Other is probably best. There are just too many different choices here.

I've seen that some forms now ask what pronoun you should be referred to as instead. Seems like an interesting, kind of pragmatic choice.

Let me speak from experience, I myself am Trans. Since I know I'm male, I'm going to pick male on my profile, since I'm male. I won't pick other, or female, because that's simply not how I identify. I think a other option helps with those who are gender queer or otherwise identify differently. 🙂

In my opinion, "male" and "female" already cover everything a transgender person would ever need. The few transgender people on my forum (that have bothered to fill out their profile) have generally set it as what they're comfortable being identified as.

Then there's the "other" option, for the humungous list of weird made up genders that stem from tumblr.
