Guide to google submission
This is an article written by Adrian DeBono - Owner of makemysitepopular.com
This tutorial will guide you through the steps of getting your website/forum appearing on google search results.
Start off by making your site with as much content as possible, Google does not use meta tags as much as it used to, they can still influence the search quite a bit though.
Keywords and Web content
to get some sort of result from a search engine you will want to have certain keywords in some sort of content, if you try and just put a whole bunch of keywords which won't even be related to your content, you could have negative results as Google will dismiss your keywords even more.
Think about your content and what people are likely to search for to find your information.
Let's just say someone was to ask Google " how do I make my site more popular?"
In my URL alone I have 4 keywords which would respond back search results to my website.
While developing your keywords scanned through your content or find an online keyword analyser to find the most commonly used words.
The Meta tags for keywords will just help the search engine analyse your content easier. There is an important rule about using keywords though, try not to replicate the same keywords in your Meta tags
For example - site promotion, Web site promotion, promoting websites, popular websites, website for promoting websites, add traffic, increase traffic, add lots of traffic
The above keywords include the word:
promotion three times
website five times
traffic three times
Most search engines would dismiss the key word after one or two duplicates or may dismiss your key words completely.
Try and create your Meta tag description to be as close to the content as possible, on many of my sites I have had to create new descriptions for every page, this went to the keywords and titles as well.
Once you have decided this you can now create a site map,
Google will need site map to calculate how many pages are to be submitted and each pages priority.
What is priority
priority is a grade given to a particular webpage so that search engines know which ones are more important, if you had an index page which was full of content and then you have a contacts page which had your e-mail address and contact details you would give your index page a higher ranking, this is when priority comes into things. A lot of site map generators will create these priority numbers for you so the work has been done for you
This is one of the most useful site map generators, it's free to use and is accessed only online
http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
To start off creating your site map you will be asked for the starting URL, make sure you include your full address including the HTTP address.
For example:
http://www.makemysitepopular.com/
Next you will be asked about your change frequency, this change frequency is of value that indicates how frequently the content of your website is likely to change, if you have a forum it will be always changing.
Where it asks for last modification you can set it to use service response or if the site has never been crawled before you can use none.
The next bar will ask you to select your priority setting, it is important to leave this on automatic if you are unsure. It will work out the most popular pages based on content.
Once you have finished you can click on start on the site map will be generated, depending on how many pages you have this can take a few seconds to 30 to 40 minutes. It is also dependent on your connection speed too.
Once this is done you will be given three files to download,
The only one you will need is where it says " download uncompressed XML site map"
You can right click and select save as.
Your next task is to upload this sitemap.xml file to where your website is being stored.
Google submission
your next step to submitting to Google is to sign up to Google itself.
Once you have signed up you will have the option to go to Webmaster tools.
In Webmaster tools you will be given the option to add a site.
Write the URL of your website and press add a site.
You will need to verify your website before it can be submitted properly.
Click either to add a Meta tag to your index page, or upload a blank page with the filename they specify.
It will usually look something along the lines of this:
If you are not sure how to create a blank page just create a text file in notepad and then rename it to the file that they request. The only reason they do this is so they can make sure that you are the owner of the website.
Next you will ask you to add your site map, specify which directory Google can find your site map and click submit.
It will take some time for Google to find your site so be patient eventually it will happen.
Find how many links Google knows are linking to you
this is one trick that I found works really well, it will show how many pages are linking to you that Google knows of
To do this right in your URL without the "HTTP://www" part, for example: "makemysitepopular.com"
If I was to search that in Google I would find all the pages Google knows about that link to my URL.
I did some tests with this to see how quickly Google will refresh these numbers, and on average this can take up to one month for any new links to your website to appear on Google search results
