So currently I am paying a North Carolina-based webhost called Dacentec about $50 a month for a dedicated server, and it's taking a hit on my bank account, considering I am only 19 and working part-time. The thing is, this server is used to host my Debian-based Linux distribution called KarmOS, and I know some bigger projects mostly get hosting through sponsor deals with different webhosts, datacenters or universities.

My question is, how would be the best way to convince a webhost/datacenter my project will take off and needs a hosting sponsor? Thanks.

$50 a month for a dedicated server isn't that bad if you really think about it. I pay $120 a month for my dedicated server. I have seen rates for even way more than that. Something tells me that no one is going to donate a dedicated server to you unless maybe one of the your developers in into running their own hosting network and then again, they still have to pay for that server. You might try to find "smaller hosts" trying to make a name for their companies and see if they would donate a VPS account or something like that.

Just curious: what does your own Debian-based Linux distribution offer that the full Debian O/S version cannot do?

Are you using all that bandwidth for OS downloads? It would probably be orders of magnitude cheaper to use Amazon S3 for downloads.
