No matter how much i advertise, how much I ask or whatever, I can never seem to start and make a succesful forum. How do you do it? It's really frustrating.

Any tips. i really want to create a succesful forum. (For once ~sad~ )

Make sure you download the forum software and then upload to host.
Never use one of those 'Create on the web' things.

Domains to use:

.com
.net
.org
.co.uk
.us
.org.uk
.info
.uk.net

(any others look tatty)

I get mine from http://godaddy.com

Before you advertise, make sure your board is highly customized and looks appealing.

Advertise everywhere you can, add it to Google, Yahoo & other search engines.

--------------

Keep the forum full with posts and threads to get people posting, the worst thing is people logging in and having no source of discussion.

Try not to have a forum which is too specific,

Example:
Holidays in Glasgow Forums

When you could have

Scotland Holidays

This makes it more general, and more open for discussion.

That's not true. You don't have to have your own domain. You can have a web based forum and have it HIGHLY successful. You could just re-do the buttons. Topic icons. Skins. Templates. And the portal. And you can also put the link of your forum in your sig so whenever you post it would show up on the bottom of your post everytime. 😉

Yeah, but not like my forums is going to last long.

Soon, everyone's forums will die.

Not if the owner has a lot of confidence. People always come and go. Your forum may die out when XBOX 720 comes out. Lol

ROFL
I know people who have paid for domains like xbox720forums.com
so if they come out, they will be popular on the internet.

Wow that's rediculous. They wouldn't have their next console named xbox720. Unless their retarded and think of a name at the last second.Nevermind.

I don't see why more people don't use a "real" domain such as a .com or .net Godaddy and many other places sell them for less then $1.00 a month! Even a poor person can find that kind of money in less than 10 minutes.

I cant count how many times I found a great forum that I liked. I then some how misplace the link and cannot ever find the site again because the domain was to long.

As for promoting your site just keep trying and don't give up.

Well some people are a little younger. Do not have a credit card, and most likely do not want to tell their parents, because they might be embarrassed or would just rather save money. o.o

I can understand the saving money part but I cant understand the credit card part. Out of the 10 million + people that pay $14.99 a month on World of Warcraft about 70% are kids with no credit cards. They sure can come up with a simple $9.95 a year for a real domain.

My personal opinion is that any serious forum or website owner should have a real domain.

You're right :\ but I think running your own thing for a child is different. I don't know how to explain it, but for me it's okay to ask for WoW, but for a domain, it's weird lol.

i'm considering getting a proper domain.

And to run a successful forum, you need a genre of forum that will appeal to pretty much anyone for a start.

And your domain should relate to the Genre of your forum.

I agree a real domain would help alot.

However, once you get that and your software all setup how did you get the people?

We have a couple month old forum. There's a handful of people in there, but certainly not alot. It's like a catch 22 - no one will join because no one is in there, and no one is in there because no one will join.

What do you do?

Well, I run a successful forum and its a free host. I dont think yo have to have a paid host to have a great site. You just needs lots of detication and time.

I don't think just wanting a successful forum is a very good viewpoint to take..maybe a change in attitude? 🙂
