Hey guys,

I used to run a site called Music Junkies. This was a music discussion based forum. I had a lot of success with it and put a lot of hard work into it.

I'm just trying to get a feel for starting another music discussion site. As everywhere I look on the web the ones that are currently up are either dead or slowly dying.

Any thoughts?

I'd say have something unique (a good blog maybe?); and get a good staff team in with you before you start the project. If you could find a bunch of people interested in different genres, so you could have a bunch of different active forums, that would be really cool as well.

Maybe offer pre recorded video music lessons on the music forum? That could be a unique way to attract musicians and music fans.

If you have the time and money then this is a good thing to get into. This is already done with school subjects such as maths where a pre-recorded video teaches a particular thing and is quite profitable

I used to always think such a specific theme can be harmful. However with the right team and people it can definitely work.

Maybe have content teams. Such as per genre? Perhaps they are the 'experts' of that particular genre or favor it a lot. These members would be given the job to find content to post// new songs, bands, youtube videos in that genre. Of course they can post in others too but having people dedicated would be awesome.

Offer iTune/other music products as prizes. [Ticketmaster giftcard would be cool too, people can use this for concerts and etc and you don't necessarily have to pay for the entire ticket but giving a bit towards a ticket is awesome].

Layout is important, but since you've had a successful one before I'm sure you know that. I'm curious of how the layout would be though. A good blog would be cool - interviewing new up and coming singers could be a goal? 😱

I think it has plenty of potential - just have to gear it the right way. 🙂

Some really good suggestions here. I agree with having staff that post original content within a certain genre. Let the staff pick what genre of music they're knowledgeable of and that will help produce good content.

You said many of the music communities you've checked out are pretty much dead? When I hear this, it's a wonderful feeling because this is an open door for you with the opportunity of becoming big within this niche. Dead competitors means a smooth ride to the top of the Google mountain.

Here are a few ideas:

- Interview underground bands, singers...etc
- Review new albums! YouTube will be your best friend with helping you gain followers and drive traffic to your community.
- Hold contest for artist that are registered on your community. This will help get them noticed. Perhaps feature them at the end of a YouTube video.
- Review new artist on YouTube

Hope this helped a bit. I wish you the best and I would plan ahead of time for a name, staff, logo and theme.

If that happens. He can definitely review my album and interview me.

I am definitely still contemplating this idea. Might be a great project to work on over my winter break. Thank you for all of the suggestions 🙂

Look at why the forums are dead - research, research and research some more, and even more after that.

Then create a forum and avoid those mistakes.

You really will only know whether it is worth it or not unless you try it! 🙂
