Everyone has a different way of doing this. It's a pretty well known fact that people want to join forums when their friends invite them, and are active members of the forum. While as a forum admin, word of mouth is your best friend, it can also be your worst enemy. The negative word of mouth goes just as fast as the positive word of mouth. How do you increase the positive word of mouth, while also keeping the negative word of mouth down?

The best way to get the word of mouth out is to tell each individual once or twice about your forum that you're trying to promote, and if they don't go ahead with joining it, then don't pester them about it anymore. Something I've learned over the years. People will join when they feel like doing so.

This is great advice. It's always a good idea to encourage members to reach out to people they know and who might be interested in joining but it's not something that should be done repeatedly. I was once a part of a forum where the administrator actually threatened members to recruit or be kicked out. That was a huge turn off.
