Ghost is a competitor to Wordpress written in JavaScript using Node.js, although it's primarily geared towards running blogs. It run by a non-profit organisation and currently makes around $1.2 million per year.

Unlike Wordpress, it isn't tied down by huge masses of insecure legacy code which they barely manage to "secure" with bits of duct tape, it's fast, and it's far more modern in both looks and code.

And while, it's largely a hosting offering from Ghost itself or something you run on a VPS, quite a few shared hosts have started offering Node.js hosting, including and I haven't tried them but MyBB's Lead Developer, Euan seems fond of them, WebFaction.

It was originally a Kickstarter:

They also have a number of interesting stories such as this for those curious about large scale migrations from a set of dedicated servers to a cloud infrastructure (not from Wordpress, this is about their own internal infrastructure for countless hosted blogs):

I'm keeping a close eye on them and looking forward to them eating a bigger piece of the pie (even though I don't really like JavaScript lol).

That looks interesting, thanks for sharing. If I was starting a new blog I would definitely check it out, although it looks more complicated to set up and manage than Wordpress, most likely because they want to sell their own hosting plans. 😉 And the ACP looks just like Wordpress, and to be honest, that name is a bit of a turnoff. 🙂
