Giving away free graphics, photos, clip-art for back links?

I notice there are a lot of free clip-art, stock photos, and graphics websites which let people use their artwork if they promise to make a back link back to their website if they use their clip-art in your articles, website template, etc.

Does this actual work, or do most people just use photos, clip art, and pictures without linking back to the original source of the picture?

Usually people just use the pictures without linking back, but sometimes you can go check the site to make sure they are doing what they said. But in some cases you have those good people who will link back.

There are some who link and some who don't link back. I would usually link back if it is unique to the site.

We used to run a myspace-graphics site that did this. People linked to us from all the place - it helps, and it works.

I would give away the graphics with no back link requirement, I would make it voluntary. The traffic is what you want as well as the link. People coming to download your graphics means unique visitors.

How will more and more people find you if you don't enforce a link back to your site? You can't get unique visitors without linking to your site. Also, it's not always about the backlinks. It's about acknowledgement of your work and time spent on creating such media.

Why would people download your graphics if they can't find them because you're not having a link back requirement? Also - how does it provide unique visitors?
