Is running a campaign to give money to a charity a good way to get increased traffic? People appreciate when sites give back to those in need, but does it really increase traffic?

It really depends on the charitable effort. It needs to actually be discussed, so it would need to be very impactful. However, it is possible to have a huge impact without spending a lot of money. For example, starting a food or clothing drive for people in need is a type of charity event where you are relying on the donations of others, and you can spend a much smaller amount of money to organize the event. This is the type of thing where it could bring in traffic if your website is sponsoring the charity drive and if your website / social media pages have information about it online.

In the business world what I've noticed is that doing charitable things doesn't always immediately bring in new customers, but it definitely helps. Our company has done a couple specific things in our town and state and pretty much every client I've worked with so far has mentioned it at least once - new clients usually always ask about it, and even people we are hiring bring it up. This is all because we have 1 page on our website dedicated to this. It may not be how the clients or job candidates found us, but once they land on our site and read about that it clearly has a huge impact on them.

not really as most people want to receive something back in return.

This I have to agree with. All too often people are willing to give because they always want something back in return.

Giving to charity is exactly that, wanting to give to those in need and not expecting anything in return.

Do I feel it would help with traffic to my site? It may but I don't think it would help a great deal with how many people would more than likely want something in return for giving to the charity.

Might help to boost but when the event is over and completed most members would just fad away.
