GoDaddy, a site likely closed under SOPA, supports SOPA

Has GD stated why they support it so much? I mean a detailed announcement as to why this bill is good from their perspective?

Nope, I think they made a vague notice that they support it. Nothing too in-depth. I did hear that GD, most of the time, stands behind government decisions.

godaddy will really lose significant amount of clients because of this. i myself will transfer also move.

Luckily I use Namecheap 😉 I use to use godaddy but because I Didn't put my phone number in they decided to suspend my domain since then ive switched to namecheap.

I also sent them a message only to get the same email in reply that was sent via a there bot not a real human

this wouldn't surprise me.

how is that possible?
i did use a fake number in my account, i wasn't suspended though.

Kinda sucks because all my domains are Godaddy 🙁
Well, if this passes we're all screwed anyways soo...

They still support it as there name is still in the congressional support AND they still support PIPA, So no matter what this boycott is still going to happen unless they ... well either way it's still going to happen, After all the bad PR moves they did (Supporting SOPA, Killing the Elephant, PIPA, etc.)

Obviously they only reason they "say" they took away their support for SOPA is because of the HUGE amount of transfers out, and if they start denying transfers out because they support SOPA, ICANN WILL step in and do something as they can't deny transfers:
My registrar is refusing to transfer my name. What do I do?

A registrar may legitimately deny a transfer request in certain limited circumstances, as follows:
Evidence of fraud
Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) action
Court order
Reasonable dispute over the identity of the person authorizing the transfer
Domain name is on hold due to payment owed for a previous registration period
Express written objection from the domain name holder
Domain name is in "Lock" status (Registrars must provide a readily accessible and reasonable means for name holders to remove the lock status. Contact your registrar for assistance.)
Domain name is within 60 days of initial registration
Domain name is within 60 days of a previous transfer

Registrars are required to specify a reason when denying a transfer request. Contact either the current registrar or the registrar you wish to transfer to for assistance.

If you have questions about the transfer policy, please contact your registrar or you may file a complaint with ICANN by going to http://reports.internic.net/cgi/registr ... report.cgi.

So obvious they can't do it unless they want ICANN on their @$$...I wonder if ICANN supports sopa?

While the article is completely biased, I suggest not buying domains from GoDaddy if you do not support this legislation. If you are interested in stopping such legislation, write to your congressperson.

If you don't know what SOPA is, Google it. It's poorly written legislation that gives companies and the government the right to shut down infringing and non-infringing websites.

It's more than that. If you live in the United States, you could be tracked, and put it jail for up to 5 years.

I read from the owner of Weebly.com which is a well known free host that his domain went offline because a "Small restaurant owner complained about a bad restaurant review on Weebly by a Weebly member."

The person on the other end seemed startled that I had actually answered. It was someone from GoDaddy's abuse department, who informed me that they were "turning off" weebly.com due to a complaint.

"WHAT?" I said frantically into the phone. He explained that they had received a complaint about the content of a site, and that they were removing the DNS entries for weebly.com because of it. I asked him if they had contacted us previously -- he responded that they hadn't.

The site in question featured a bad review of a local business, and that business had complained. Why on earth would a domain registrar take it upon themselves to police content?"

GoDaddy seem to be getting worse even before SOPA is even passed. This is ridiculous that GoDaddy made Weebly.com domain not accessible because of a bad "restaurant review from someone who posted on Weebly.com free host." I hope this does not mean GoDaddy member sites gets punished because of negative articles where the domain owner or one of their members are just being honest and using free speech to voice their opinion about stuff which is legal.

Anon says that this has passed but it said in the post that this will get even worse if the bill passes All i know is Godaddy is going to lose it business over this over 60,000 domains have been moved away from them.

PS: Including my deleted account there.

Today is moveyourdomainday for namecheap. Coupon code SOPASUCKS and transfers are $6.99. I have transferred 🙂

Also, GoDaddy lost 18,220 domains to namecheap today alone.

Update: 19,600 domains.

So how many hundred thousand domains does GoDaddy have left?

Wikipedia says they had 45 million in 2010. This means not even 1% of their domains were lost if this is accurate.

Right now the year is ending. Many will expire. And people may not buy from godaddy. So they'll fall even more.
