Hey guys,

I am looking for an extremely light weight anti-malware program (preferably free, but paid is okay) that will mainly just block me from visiting dangerous sites. I don't want a full out thing like Avast and et cetera, mainly just a program that blocks malicious sites before I visit them.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

-- 08 Jul 2013, 12:08 --

Disregard, I'm using OpenDNS w/ TinyWall (windows firewall supplement) and MBytes Pro.

I have CCleaner and Defraggler for PC speed. 🙂

However, if you have alternatives, please do list!

Hi there Jake I recommend using Malwarebytes

This software is great it prevents Zero Day Malware Infections and also prevents malicious websites.

The free version doesn't do this though the pro version is only $24.95 which is the cost of a good meal at a restaurant

Here is the website it has the features all here for you

Thanks - if you read my edit, that's what I'm using.

Oh sorry I misread it was typed up as Mbytes, I assumed it was something else.

Here's 2 I recommend Spywareblaster it doesn't have a scan feature though it's a pretty simple program it adjusts your browsers security and tweaks your cookies in order to prevent malware, scumware, trojans etc. Then it considers it's job done. The only thing it does require is for you to update it weekly so it can continously prevent malware on your computer. It's free so it's good for what it's worth

another recommendation is SuperAntiSpyware it's got both freeware and also to go PRO option, the freeware is good for scanning for threats before the trial ends pretty impressive and if you do consider upgrading you always have that choice. Though if you have both programs spyware blaster and anti spyware. It will help.

Been using it for 2+ years and it's absolutely the best program for fighting malware. I am using free version and I have no problems with it. avast free + malwarebytes which is also free 🙂

My computer got infected with some kind of destructive malware when I visited a page that had pop ups. It was just a regular forum but apparently something in the pop up infected my computer. And, I was not able to bring up any program except Malwarebytes and make that run. The spyware completely shut down every other program I tried to run to keep me from uninstalling it. Malwarebytes saved my computer.

Have a look at http://www.mywot.com

It's a pretty sweet tool that grades websites based on users experience there. It works flawlessly in Google Chrome.

-- 24 Jul 2013, 02:41 --

Malwarebyes is good, but it's not an active scanner. I'd recommend one that's able to be set on a scheduled run and blocking any incoming malicious content. We recommend ESET NOD32 Internet Security WITH Malwarebytes.

It works good if you have webmail as well. It will scan the link before you click on it.

I don't trust Mywot since sometimes MyWot members/raters make false claims about sites being spammy, and bad because they disagree with the site, but the site has no spammy content.

I read a lot of poor reviews about MyWot on MyWot's Firefox Add-on page saying MyWot.com members and reviewers make false reviews which negatively affect their sites reputation, and getting in contact with the admin and mods, are impossible to do because they ignore you on their support forum.

There are also 4 pages of complaints of MyWot on http://www.complaintsboard.com/?search=mywot&page=3 There are complaints of Mywot being spyware, the staff and members of MyWot being manipulative, biased and rude in the forums and ratings.

I recommend Norton Toolbar at http://us.norton.com/products/tutorials ... on_toolbar since at least it is run by Norton which is owned by Symantec which is one of the most popular antivirus, and computer security firms in the world.

MyWoT certainly isn't an incredible service, but it does do a good job at calculating links and harmful whathaveyou's.

Norton Toolbar is indeed better.

You could also have a look at AVG's toolbar, which also does the same thing Norton does.

https://www.virustotal.com/en/#url is the best way to scan to see if a link is harmful or not without installing anything on your web browser which can potentially slow it down if your PC is older, or there is a compatibility problem with the add-on with your browser, Windows, or your PC.

If you use Firefox, you can use https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/vtzilla/ which scans links for malware.

"With VTZilla extension you can scan a given site with just a right-click on its link, having a maliciousness report available before following the link. At the same time, the download manager will display the option of scanning the file to be downloaded, being able to discriminate malicious files before storing them in your PC."

It is not as convenient as MyWot since you need to right click the link, but Virus Total is one of the most trusted online virus scanners which can usually determine if a link or file uploaded to Virus Total contains malware or a virus.
