Google bans co.cc

Wow did not see this coming. But it was a good choice on Google's side.

Doesnt effect me. I have a .net

However,
To me, google's job is to provide us with the most results for the content we search for. They should not block out entire domain's or sub-domain's.

Didnt see this coming lucky im getting a .info in 24hrs

Wow that is very stupid if you ask me. Co.Cc is a full domain with dns support. It has many users aswell.

Hah, nice. Doesn't affect me though. I never clicked on sites with a "co.cc" anyways, even if they had the information I was looking for.

I use a plain old .com.

It's just the one people are the most familiar with, that's why I picked it. No other reason.

I've never owned a .co.cc domain and don't intend to own one. Yet, I'm a bit surprised by this, Google say they are doing it to ban malware, it's difficult to understand why they don't just ban the dangerous sites and allow the good ones.

co.cc domains are so easy to signup for and it would be a never ending battle as once a domain gets blocked, a new one will be set up and Google won't know until that site has started distributing malware.

I do kind of support Google in their decision. Ultimately all they are doing is banning 1 domain. However that one domain has many million sub domains. Basically http://www.co.cc is the full domain and if you have a site like random.co.cc, you actually have a subdomain. While alot of people may use co.cc for legit reasons, there is alot of abuse and co.cc are probably not doing alot to solve the problem. If another domain (like forumpromotion.net) distributed as much malware as them, we would have been blocked ages ago so I think Google were quite lenient to let so many co.cc sub-domains get set up and appear in their results for this long.

It will send out a message to co.cc and other free sub-domain providers that they need to care more about who they give sub-domains to and ensuring they are not abused. I am sure if co.cc care and do work on clearing out alot of the abusers then Google might reconsider. It is probably more of a kick up the backside to get them to listen and act for everyones sake. An interesting sentence i found on a website regarding this is

The company also offers bulk registrations of 15,000 subdomains for a fee of $1,000
If a person pays them $1000 for 15,000 subdomains, that is alot of subdomains they can abuse and alot of blocking that needs to be done by Google. To these people, $1000 is not much money so they would soon buy more and more and more. co.cc are not doing much to help themselves. No legit person would need 15,000 co.cc sub-domains. They seem to be happy to take the money knowing that the chances are those 15,000 sub-domains are going to be used for abuse.

co.cc isn't the only domain that people give malware
.net
.com

There's a bunch... I can give examples

co.cc and .com for example are completely different. .com is an extension and .co.cc is a domain. .cc is the extension.

co.cc is a domain just like forumpromotion.net is. Take a look here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.cc

Note: "co.cc" is not an official hierarchy; it is a domain (http://www.co.cc) owned by a company who offers free subdomain redirection services.
This company offers two free co.cc domains, as well as bulk discounts for ordering as many as 15,000 domain names at a time. These domains are often used by spammers to create spam blogs, or "splogs," often with nonsense names like "extensitiesdiminutal.co.cc" and the like.

Good point, thanks for the clarification.

I've used .co.cc in the past but we have an actual domain now, so I know this won't affect me traffic wise, although that's rather dumb to ban it, though, because .co.cc is just as easy to remember as .com domains. That's not a good move really.

It has nothing to do with how easy it is to remember. Co.CC catered to spammers pretty much directly.

I hate .co.cc but I find this a bad idea. Google are supposed to supply us with the best search results some forums or websites on .co.cc could be great. There supposed to supply us with the most search results. With over 11 million of those results gone whats the point? Also it will be a hard time for youth without money wanting to start a website. Bad idea from my view

Wasn't .tk the same way for quite a while? I do remember that these freebies did attract a lot of spammers.

Its effects the people who use CO.CC and they never get traffic for free..!!
