HEY. Looking for some advice and tips on how to improve a forums Google page rank. I’m almost certain that Google is still an effective way of bring members to a forum (thought I may be wrong)

I'm am willing to spend a bit of money to get higher but you know free is always better

Get backlinks from high PR sites. And keep your content unique.

Build up your content, and occasionally link in. Depending on how good your content is, depends on if those coming to your place will help link in or not.

Backlinks, Backlinks, Backlinks

A year or so ago I had a domain that I placed a out of the box Wordpress version on. It still had the latin words on it, zero content other than that. What I did get backlinks two of which were from PR4+ websites. The next PR update and the website in all of it's emptiness was a PR4.

Backlinks is the key for PR, the more backlinks you have that are of equal or higher PR than what your PR goal is the better. If your goal is PR3 lets say and you have 5 backlinks from PR3 sites and 250 from PR2 and PR1 sites you are going to get a PR2 or PR1. The more lower PR links you get the more it brings your ranking down, or devalues the higher PR links you have obtained.

Any more though, to be honest the PR is not going to bring you high traffic, what it will do is once you achieve over PR2 is bring in outside advertisers and link seekers. If you are looking for traffic from those promoting websites than the higher PR and letting the addition of signature links in will be highly helpful. The best way to generate traffic though is seriously unique and frequently added content, this will have you actually list higher in the search engine results. Having a topic that is lower in competition always helps too

Definitely backlinks.
Google PR works on backlinks.
Whereas alexa works in traffic and popularity.

I personally have never had a forum with a page rank.
They seem to be harder than a lot of other sites to promote.
However, I've had a few websites with a page rank.
The highest of which is a PR7.
The key to google PR is Backlinks, backlinks, backlinks.

So in your experience would it be better to promote the main page rather than the forum?

Something similar happened to one of my sites recently to be honest... PR4 after a few weeks.

Yes I must admit the latest PR update was a bit fishy.
I have seen quite a few of my friends going from PR1 to PR3 in one month without doing any promoting, or anything. 😱

I think google have made a mistake with something, somewhere.
If you do not feel your PR is genuine, or have no reason to believe it is.
But you know that you haven't faked it.
Then you'll probably find google will fix in the next update.
Meaning that your PR may drop in certain cases quite considerably.

I've always known that to get a google page rank to go up is having quality backlinks to your site.

But one thing to note is that sometimes page rank doesn't matter because you need to have traffic for a site to thrive, not a higher page rank.

I don't think that page rank is totally useless, but I feel that page rank is only necessary if you are going to place ads on your site, for the advertisers to see what potential traffic they can get from the ad they want to place on your site.

That's my take on Google PR.

Has anyone on this forum actually used this 'backlinks' method you are all talking about to get on first page top 5 ranking for a 25k+ keyword term? I highly doubt it. Backlinks aren't as beneficial as you think to be honest, they are alright but aren't the whole deal. Getting 100k backlinks on ****** sites are useless, getting backlinks on PR8+ sites still won't influence me until I see a claim from a reputable site. So anyone, if you can, link me.

To get high PR, you need to be popular, backlinking is one way of showing you are popular, it's like a "trend" on twitter, get too popular, too quickly though, and Google will smell a rat.

You need backlinks that will stay linked for months or not years, if you buy say 25k of backlinks, then it shows you are popular, but in six months when they all expire, google thinks everyone is dropping you like a hot brick.

Here are a couple of youtube vids by Lisa talking about page rank:
