Hey guy's i just wanted to have a moan about google rating and maybe see if any of you have any good ideas.

I have been advertising my forum since it started in march 2008, it is pretty active and i always update info there and add more photoshop resources, but still i have 0/10 google rating, for me its become an obsession because my friends site has got 2/10 google rating and his isnt that active and he rarley advertises, so why would he have a better rating then mine?

Any help would be great... ~cheesey_grin~

Sorry guys if this is in the wrong section, if it is can someone move it to 'General Forum Chat' please, sorry -redface-

google rating, or pagerank, has absoulutely nothing to do with activity or how much you advertise the site.

it's to do with the quality and importantance of a sites content. lots of linkbacks usually mean higher PR because it shows google your content is good enough for people to link to it.

but there are loads of other factors too.

also PR takes a while update, at least a month

My friends site is just a general chat site, mine has everything you could possibly need to become a really good graphic designer...?

I know this sounds like a completely stupid thing to ask BUT can somebody explain to me linkbacks?
I know generally but when it comes down to it i'm slightly confused. Is it like how many people link to your site?
-🙁-

It's not really all about content though, as Spyka said it also depends on how many link backs you have. You only have ~879 link backs, your Page Rank also depends on the quality / page rank of the sites you put your links on.

Also make sure your site gets a steady flow of unique traffic. You alexa rank is something like 7,155,285, which isn't particularly good. ~neutral~

ok, so i get that 'linkbacks' are the way forward to help get a good page rank, but what did you mean be 'unique traffic'?

No with link backs you have to be very careful.

Google do actually spend their time viewing your site and the links to and from. You need to take close attention to what sites you do link to and from as well. If your site contains links to too many sites that are irrelivant to your site.. You will get punished for it, that is no lie. I have seen people have PR5 or PR6 and get people to pay to advertise on their site (they get heaps of requests for advertising) so they put up 30 links to sites that don't have matching content. Google looks at the links and states "They are taking advantage of their PR" and drop it from 5 or 6 to 2 or 3.

Take a 360 forum for example. Now, it is a gaming forum. This means that matching content would be: ANYTHING to do with gaming from PS3 to the Comm64 to Runescape. However, if you linked to a gardening site.... That is where you would get punished.

My BatMs.com has a PR and I didn't even attempt to get it! It just happened one day. I always had the button with 0 pr on it. One day it just said "PR1". I have a feeling though this is simply because mine is a personal site, so content genre isn't really there as any site online could be a personal site!

eaxctly how do you find out your PR? or google rank. i've had alot of members actually find my forum through google search.

impagerank will give you everything you need button wise to put on your site inc alexa. Otherwise yes use google toolbar.

Another good point. Here at fp they have top listing in google for forum promotion, have countless links in and out. But because it is about forums google are obviously not giving fp a pr due to punishment for listing so many sites that are forums but aren't about forums or forum promotion.

So basically it comes down to is hopefully google thinks your site is important enough to give a rank? And backlinks help if they're on site's like your's, relevent sites, thanks guy's for the help. ~cheesey_grin~
