When people get bored, they gossip and spread rumors or half truths. And, maybe this is just a fun way of passing the time. But, when the gossip is malicious or about another forum member, it can lead to hurt feelings. After all, most times gossip is one sided and the person who is being targeted is not there to offer their own side of the story.

How do you deal with gossip on your forum? Do you let the event play out or quell it much as you would any other type of trolling?

I've never had gossip or rumours happen on my site. In general we have more than enough to talk about or do that we don't need to gossip. Plus, I'd like to think that we're all adults and are above that kind of things.

This is my impression too. But we actively encourage other kind of gossip - the one about characters. This gets reflected in the monthly chronicles and people have a lot of fun with it!

my thoughts exactly. Members/people who gossip clearly have nothing else better to do with their time. Even worse, most rumors turn out to be lies, and that causes more problems.

Never experienced this yet, am glad I have not. Private messages to the people involved may help. Some of these things need a lot of diplomacy and at the same time a very firm stand.
