I heard on another forum that in a few years time the government is going to sell the internet to users by making people pay for the websites they want to visit and only allowing them to visit those websites. Has anyone else heard this? I'm sure it's not true because many websites and industries would die out because of this scheme. On the other hand the Government will do anything for money.

I am not sure who owns the internet, if anybody does. But the internet is a sateilite (sp) in space I think. And servers are what host websites.
Now, unless they buy the servers or the sateillite then they can do jack shit.
Unless they buy all of the ISPs or do something to block signals.

I would love to see them do this, and then be the one to find a way around it.

The whole idea is that nobody owns the internet. If the US government wanted to control the internet Not only would they have to buy every single ISP in the US, but in the whole fricking world. They would have to buy every single last piece of copper wiring and fiber optic cabling.

It isn't possible to own the internet, and Prod, how do you sell something you don't own?

They won't do it.

It would be next to impossible to do, someone somewhere would find a way around it if they did do it.

I can smell a load of bullshit a mile away. Any chance you found this out from the National Enquirer?

Glenn Beck has been talking about Obama and his FCC (Federal Communications Commission) czar working with Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc., to take over the internet for "Diversity" and "Freedom of Speech" assurance, too.

Scary stuff. I'm surprised that this topic didn't come earlier since GB has been complaining about this for a month or two.

Also it will work so that the government regulates speech and such on the internet to avoid trolls, anons, and stuff....

FAILURE.

Should be called, "Government To Regulate Advertisers"

Including those that are used to generate revenue for websites.

I was going to post something in a couple days that pretty much covers everything... :great:

Not government guys, ISPs are the ones that would do this. The government and FCC are trying to stop them from doing so.

Thanks for your ideas everyone. I live in australia and the government here are trying to limit the sites australians can access. I wondered if what i heard of what america was doing was true or not. Obviously not. 😀 thanks

Bloody KRudd, Prod, you know that wont happen, look what has happened with fiber optics, absolutely nothing.

I doubt they will do what they are trying to do in Australia, it's not possible as there are always ways to get around it, pretty easily actually.

Isn't a big thing in the US right now Net Neutrality, which would prevent this from happening?

Turn off Glenn Beck. Everything he says on his show is to slander the Democratic party and/or for his own personal gain.

Anyway, the first post is backwards, it's the other way around. A bunch of ISPs (Internet Service Providers) are trying to put in limits for your connection. Some of their plans would have you pay extra depending on how many sites you want to visit (like, 10$ a month for news sites/20$ for news sites and social networking sites, 30$ for those and games, etc etc.) Obama is a supporter of Net Neutrality, which would stop ISPs from doing this and keep the internet the same it is now.

I'm pretty sure the FCC is getting net neutrality passed, though McCain tried to block it with a bill that would allow ISPs to do whatever they wanted.

As long as there are are people nobody will be able to own the internet or control it as someone will always find a way around it.

Since when did the US government own the internet?

I got to agree with you there. Internet is WORLDWIDE. They got to have an agreement with other country governments before doing that plan.

I just want to rant about the new Internet filter that will be implemented in Australia...

First up, FFFFFUUUUUU! >=[

Anyway, this was developed through the idea of 'protecting children' and to block 'child pornography'. Good in theory? -_-

How are they doing it? Instead of putting in some much needed funds into Australia's police department, they're bringing in a manditory filter, as if they're treating absolutely every Australian Internet user as a criminal.

What this will do:
- Slow down the country's already dismal Internet speeds
- Block out many pornography sites, as well as some which aren't (some Poker sites have been blacklisted as well)

What it probably won't do:
- Stop child pornography <_<

96% of Australians don't want the filter and they're bringing it in anyway. The f***?!
