First Impressions

First Impressions are not that good,I don’t know where it all started, but I hate, and I mean hate those secondary icons in the forum descriptions, it’s like being back at school reading a Janet and John book, I don’t need a picture to give me a clue what a sentence says. Even worse than that some are not that specific to the description anyway.
The banner proudly boasts that the forum is for “Games-Graphics-General”, yet your graphics section is completely bereft of posts or topics. So for me it’s not a good start, and not one that would encourage me to look further.

For me banners should shout a message as to what the forum is about, this one does not, its just a plain font on a black background which doesn’t do anything for me at all, I also find the solid wall of black, and white text a little off putting, there’s too much of a contrast, some subtle grey tones would have made the theme a lot easier on the eyes, the forum icon’s look just like standard icons so to me there has been little or no effort to customise the theme to suit your needs.
I also get the impression the navbar is secondary to the login/register on the front page, not sure if that is intentional and experimental, but for me it doesn’t work, it’s not an ideal theme in my book. The whole feeling I get is a sandbox feel, it’s as if with the double forum icons and the comic style look that you are trying to teach me how to use a forum.

Statistics and Activity

The stats in your footer do not add up with the stats per forum, 15000 posts in the footer, barely half that if you add the shown posts up, so I cannot believe the stats in the footer, either post count wise or member wise, the fact you have one completely empty category, seems to bear me out on this.

Ratios

With one completely empty category I have to say that the posting ratio between forums is not as it should be, apart from that the posting seems evenly spread out, the most frequented being the introduction and lounge forum, which is to be expected, as it is the case with most forums.
The forum has three admins, which is more than enough to cope with membership numbers and the amount of members that would be online at any particular time.
It’s just that empty category which keeps letting you down.

As stated the content is fairly even spread out in the active fourms, but yet again that empty category shouts out that the board isn’t busy, you also have a Minecraft forum; the description of which says “Minecraft is really popular around here. So much so that it deserves its own section. Have fun mining!” sort of contradicts itself because it is totally empty.

I cannot understand why the navlinks are where they are, it’s different I will admit, but to me it is off putting, apart from that the links work, and they get you to where you want to go, it’s typical MyBB so it’s very difficult to get lost

Final Remarks
There are several things wrong in my eyes which need to be corrected to put this forum on the right track, the first is so obvious and should have been sorted out before a review was requested, submitting a forum with a completely empty category was quite brave, because it was bound to be noticed and reduce your score.
I think too that the banner is too simple, it may be intentional to make it simple, but it can look too simple, that is how this one appears to me.
Finally the theme and secondary icons are a minus point, even an out of the box theme needs some customisation, this looks as though it has none, the MS icons look too comic like (I’ve never liked MS icons), plus a lot of them do not actually describe the forum very well.
Your options of what to do next are a little limited, however you do need to sit back and take a long hard look at things with a critical eye, a tweak here and there would make a lot of difference.
Personally I would stay away from such a dark theme in future for what seems to be a light hearted genre.
The most difficult part is going to get that empty category moving, as the domain is G3 you are going have to come up with something else beginning with "G" or simply get some content into the Graphics section.

I am extremely confused, but let me start by clarifying a few things.

First off, I have no idea which section you're talking about thats so empty. Agreed that there are a couple of sections with a lot less threads than there should be, but most other sections have good amount of posts in them.
Could you possibly link me with a screenshot of what you keep referring to as empty sections? Perhaps there's a mistake in my permissions settings thats not allowing a member to see the section's threads.

Secondly, where you keep saying the graphics section has very little activity, with 243 threads and 1,945 posts, how much more active could a section get with the current amount of members and online time we have?

I agree that the icons are childish and distractive, and I'm definitely going to working on custom icons, but they are there to detract from the overall darkness of the theme and add a cheery touch to forum browsing. Surely you can see that.
There are still some customizations to do, but the entire theme is already a custom one. I have to carefully fine-tune it to our forum needs.

Regarding the missing posts, actually we have 4 active group subforums and a junks folder with quite a lot of spam. I'm planning on routinely cleaning the junk folder of spam every year or so till the forum gets larger.

I am quite certain that perhaps you did not use the member account I have provided. Members are unable to see stats and posts of the graphics section because I did not want any abuse of resources our members have provided. I will be changing this very soon now to a better option where they simply cannot "read" a thread in there. Apologies if there has been a misunderstanding.

I always review a forum as a guest, I feel that way I get better understanding of how first time visitor would react to the forum.
I'm not sure how easy it is to set up MyBB's permissions, but I do know that phpBB's are a pain in the neck, so I always tend to check what different groups can and cannot see.

I would like to request that the review be reconsidered from the point of view of a member as well, and not just a guest. I mean, thats why I was asked to provide a test account right?
Me and my members have worked hard on building up an amazing community both inside, and out. I don't think it would be right to just write off a forum based on a guest's glances. 🙂

First Impressions

For me the style is too dark, black and a really dark grey do not mix, the splashes of bright colour are trying to lift it, but for me it’s too much of a contrast, I’m confused by what looks like stock icons for the forum index, yet you have taken the trouble to use what I consider irrelevant secondary icons in the forum index. I have a similar problem with the banner, it’s a little too small for me, and lacks inspiration.

Appearance

As I’ve said the theme for me is too dark, the bright splashes of colour are too bright, it just doesn’t appeal to me, normally when I see a dark them like this you get a great header and banner to lift it, some webmasters in this genre also use a background to lift the mood a little.
The white and grey text styles are not good on the eye, maybe white and a creamier colour would work better.
It’s also a little different to see the Navbar at the top of the page, I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, just different and probably not what people expect.
The plain theme becomes even more apparent when you move into the topic index pages, with no colour you see just a bland black page, something I consider very unappealing.
It may also be a good idea to use the facebook connect button at the top of the page. The genre is very competitive you need to be different, at the moment it’s just not different enough.

I’m still confused by the post counts in some forums, I can now see that there are posts in all sections, but not in the quantities set out in the statistics, I appreciate that some may have been archived, if that is the case I cannot understand why they still show in the category counts.
Even with that you have a busy forum, the problem I see is that some topics and categories are a lot busier than others, some effort need to be put in to evening the post count out across the board, that will be difficult, but you need to concentrate on those area’s the members appear to like, and widen the topics in those area’s, that should increase the activity

Ratios

Most of you posts are coming from staff, they have well over 1k each, of the rest of the membership there are a relative few with 100 posts or more, the worrying point is the numbers who join and post less than 10 times, and the amount that have never posted, so there has to be some thing wrong, either there is nothing of interest to those members, or the meta description has given them the wrong idea in organic searches, I suspect it’s a combination of the two, you are there is no doubt attracting members, but they have the wrong idea what the forum is about, this needs addressing, either by changing the meta description, or by narrowing the field of topics.

There certainly is lots of content, with the amount of active members you have it’s probably too much, you have topics which are duplicates, or because of their titles will divide the post count in a thread, and make it look less busy, eg :
In Literature you have :
Favourite Author & Favourite book, could you not merge these two.
In the same forum you have
My poems and my book of rhymes, ok these may have been made by different people, but they are practically the same topic.
Part of being an Admin is looking out for situations lie this, and thinking of ways to rectify it.

The navigation is easy to use, and with a lack of sub-forums it’s impossible to get lost, and very easy to find things, links back to the index page are good, and the main navbar is on every page, which I do like.

Final Remarks
I’m not sure that the few Icons you have on the index page help to lift the theme, once off there the bright Icons disappear, and you are left with a very dark and somewhat dreary page, to lift it across the whole forum is going to take the addition of a semi-transparent background that somehow fits what is a complicated genre.
I feel the forum title could be the root of your problems, trying to cover three genres in one forum was never going to be an easy task, the idea and concept are good, the execution is a little harder, Your problem may be that instead of appealing to people in three separate subjects, you may only be getting members interested in all three. To me it’s like combining a football forum with a rugby one, you are narrowing your audience instead of widening it.
Fine tuning is what is needed first and foremost, I would seriously look at adding a background, and seeing if that does anything to lift membership figures. Accompany that with better icons in the topic indexes and that will go a long way to improving things.
Reviewing the forum as member has lifted the score by around 20 points, re-reading my notes, convinces me that in my opinion it is the theme which is letting the site down

Thank you very much for the review Sapper. I see that the theme is not fitting in well with you, but a lot of people have claimed that it is one of the few reasons they joined the site. Because the theme was attractive to them.
Of course, that doesn't mean there shouldn't be changes made. I do realize that the gray default text for posts is a bit too dark, so I might edit it and make it lighter. I've been working on those secondary icons, and trying to blend them together so as not to make them strike out too much. So far, I've had minimal success but its a work in progress.

The threads and post which are similar, for now atleast, I would like them to remain as such. Each members prefers their own thread and usually if a thread is too similar and by the same author, I merge them together.

I really appreciate you taking time to review the site once again. My faith in FP has been restored and then some. 🙂
Thank you once again.

Thanks for the feedback, one suggestion is to have a theme chooser, and then you could see just how popular the dark theme is.

I'm glad that your faith has been restored, we on the review team aim to please all the time, thank you for giving me the opportunity to put things right.
