Probably just bots whose account creation failed so couldn't login when they tried.
Maybe! But wouldn't be names showing up and also bots don't really sign in.

Point is that it also traced the IP to some what country that's definitely not English language, one of the names had jam... Something

Spam bots do have to create an account and sign in if an account is required to post on your forums (which it is). Considering they are from non-English speaking countries, and your forum is primarily English, that makes it an even more likely indication that the logins were from some spam bots.

Forum spam bots do login when they get past your registration security, trust me I've come back to old projects to see a few thousand spam messages, tis annoying. Just try putting a login captcha on and see what happens. 🙂

Ips saying by default in red:

The Display Name or Email Address you entered does not belong to any account. Make sure that it is typed correctly.

If people don't get that, then it is better that they turn off their PCs.

Well, its an automated bot, so it can't read it and doesn't realize (immediately) that the account it tried to register didn't successfully do so.

I actually get it all the time, well all website do. The spam service from IPS works pretty good.

Actually since I upgraded to 4.1 I never had much spam on my site. Kind of a bummer in a way, no one to ban.

Oh, they most definitely do. Our last vBulletin forum was on the number 1 search ranking in google for "anime forums." We were getting in excess of 200 spam bots a day. Our solution was to add spam-o-matic. Even then, the server was being walloped with 200k blocked bot registrations within a short space of time. With so many login attempts it was straining the server, so in the end, we had to ban China. That was actually the only way to relieve the bombarding of the gates. Even with China banned, over the course of a year, it was at 800k attempted registrations by known bot IPs. That number would be 100 fold if we didn't IP block China. This was a site with 120k registered members. That'll tell you how bad they can get.

We don't have that issue at the moment with the new site, Phew!

They're just bots trying to log in. They may have tried, and failed, to register accounts already. (If you have a plugin like stopforumspam you may see in the log file there them having been blocked already.)

My own site is not huge but it still gets about ~400 spam post attempts per day. (Though I should point out I've already blocked all of Russia and China. If I hadn't then I'd guess my spam attempts per day would be 10 times that amount...)
I don't know offhand how many spambots it's blocked each day, but likely quite a few.
