Well, the best Advice that I can give is to think twice before doing something.
Now I'm not sure how or why you got hold of two XenForo Licences but you could of just asked the Team to delete one instead of both.
You should always think twice before doing something. Especially when things get heated. Besides, we all do stupid things in Life and it's a normal part of it. Just try to accept it. Again, it's normal for mistakes like that to happen.
There really is no advice for good decision making when you aren't given a specific example to work with. Each decision would be influenced by a number of factors as there is no one size fits all solution to decision making. Learning from mistakes however will help ensure you don't make the wrong decision more than once in any given situation in which you first chose poorly.
The best way to make good decisions is to give yourself time. Whenever I feel like I need to make a choice, or perhaps I have some "unkind" words I'd like to share with someone, I always give myself a full 24H before making my choice. This gives me time to reflect on how my decisions could affect myself and those around me.
Take a step back and look at the pros and cons of each choice from an unbiased standpoint. Ask the opinion of others, and give yourself time.

I think when it comes to this particular situation, you should think "Do I need these licenses?" before diving in a buying two of them. This can really go for anything in real life. Always think before you do is my advice.
