Facebook was originally built in PHP, but they seem to have been moving away from it in favour of their own language and at the end of 2017, they announced that they were going to drop support for PHP entirely in their JIT runtime, HHVM.
The language itself is fairly similar to PHP, although it seems to be strongly typed and has largely broken away from a lot of the bad decisions PHP made in the past.
It is also much faster than PHP, although I still think it suffers from a lot of PHP's design flaws like the web script model, hence it is too similar to PHP to be useful to me, while being different enough to not be compatible and to trip people up.
