Has anyone has success with prizes for forum participation?

Hi!

I'm interested if other have used - and if so had success with - incentives for encouraging forum membership and partipation?

I newly installed a forum and am trying weekly prizes - $50 to the top poster each week, $30 to second top poster, $20 to third place top poster. My one concern is this onging incentive/contest could lead to poor quality posting, though at this point I am not worried as my main problem is no posting at all. So far, no luck, even though at this point it'd only take 2 posts for a member to earn the $50(and I'm not bsing about it, my budget is $1k for prizes over 10 weeks, but I don't think people on social media I've tried advertising the forum to believe it is real, oh well will keep trying). I've uploaded youtube videos about it and post about it on twitter to my followers, though litterally can't get any participants.

I'm going to see how it goes over the next few weeks and post the results here. Though I wanted to know:
Has anyone else tried a similar reward system, and did you have anyl uck?

I know I just have to be patient, the search traffic I get from my blog related to the niche/niches of the forum may generate organic members in the long run.

I think that when you first start out that you need to really extend the time between prizes, or you'll run through the money fast!

When I first started with Christianity Haven, prizes were offered for things, and members weren't really interested for the most part. There were a couple of people who absolutely could use the gift cards, and they participated, but people preferred interesting conversations. But that's THAT site.

Looking at your site, I saw that there are way too many different forums to post in, meaning it could take months before someone else posts in a section to have any kind of conversation. I like forums where people talk to one another. They ask questions and they can expect answers in a short time period...a week or so is good for me.

But getting back to the prizes, yeah, extend the time for winning.
