Want to? I never have been. Not something I care to do. But I knew a penpal growing up who was an extra in commercials. She didn't get famous or made money but she enjoyed it immensely.
I haven't but the area where I live is used quite regularly for filming outdoor scenes so I do get to watch how it all works. I cannot imagine for the life of me why anyone would want to be an extra having to hang around all day in costume for 10 minutes work resulting in a couple of minutes screen time. I wouldn't last an hour.
I was almost in a print ad once back in the early 90s when I worked in advertising. The Sales Rep wanted me and a couple other people in the agency to be the ad's feature models but the creative director wanted to hire "real" models.
