URL shorteners that generate money are those that place advertising within the links you shorten. This means that when someone clicks your link, they have to see that advertising before reaching the desired link. Have you ever tried making money with URL shorteners? If so, how did it go?

I don't understand what this is? Does it redirect to a page with an ad before redirecting to the actual location? Does it open a pop up ad?

Either way they sound like time wasters and spam which are bad for your website's reputation.

In my experiences, it's a landing page that you're forced to look at for like 15 seconds before it then redirects you where you want to go. It's typically some kind of ad, and it usually has a button that you press to leave the landing page, but it'll be greyed out until whatever amount of time has passed. Sometimes I'll see things like that on download sites like MediaFire.

I haven’t tried. You need traffic to ean from these links, if you can build traffic why not use another methods like affiliate marketing or even your sales pages, instead of using url shorter?

I never did this, I do remember when people would use URL shorteners on Youtube back in the 10's though. I always felt that some of them were malicious, so I viewed them in a negative way.

I tried in my early days of making money online. was never able to get enough clicks on the links to be able to receive payment. Then I gave up

Nope. I find them to be annoying, and I would never use them.
