Have you had a look at Discourse forum software yet?

Just had a look and I can't say I'm a fan.

Looks cool. I don't like the main theme. Not fluid. Really large. But the idea is amazing and I hope they continue to develop it. Funny that they said free and open-source, but there is a buy now button.

Just looking at the main forum was enough to give me an impression... and not a very good one either. Can't really say I'm a fan. It kind of reminds me of this one forum software a couple years ago (back in 2008 or 09 I think) and it's just way too basic in my opinion. I'll take phpBB or MyBB anyday over this.

I agree with the comments re the appearance of the forum. However, I'm happy to see that they are making a big effort to be innovative in the area of forum software and they are still in the early stages of development. Hopefully we will see something exciting coming from Discourse in the future.

That's sort of true. You can't always base software on appearance, especially if it's a brand new one still in development. Who knows? Like you said, maybe a year or two down the road they may impress us with good features/security measurements, whatever. I guess we'll just have to keep an eye on this project and see what they come out with. Still not sure if it's something I'd like to use on a live forum though. Maybe for testing/playing around purposes, but an actual live forum, most likely not...

I like a lot of the features of this software (the no page aspect is kind of neat, I'm curious to know how that'd affect servers on really large topics and with multiple users accessing it though since I could see that using a lot of resources)... I don't mind the main theme.

Granted I'm basing my understanding of this feature on what I've seen and what they've stated, I don't have any actual behind the scenes understanding of how it works yet so I could be wrong about this...
But one thing I don't really like is the fact that it looks like it'd be way too easy for users to tag things whatever they wanted and end up creating tons of categories. So if people start making topics of all kinds you might end up with 20 categories over a few days causing your site to look huge and barren because it went from like 4 to 20 in a short span. (I'd hope they have some sort of control/option to determine how/when to create categories)

Plus what if admins didn't want certain categories to be displayed to guests? (Like maybe they have an admin section they only want staff to see? Or like a section for member created works that's member only.)

So for me, it's an interesting concept but I'll stick with MyBB for my self-hosted needs.

Isn't there already a way to hide certain things/features from guests on pretty much all forum software these days? All you have to do is just put in the permissions for sections correctly. Or have Discovered made this easy to hide things from guests that admins don't want them to see?

There is a way to hide things on most software that I know of... But I don't proclaim to know all software and all their features. And where this software is new and still under development ( so we don't have any hands on experience with it yet ) we don't what it actually has or will be like in terms of group/permission control when it actually is released. I think it'll be interesting to see what it has, but I feel like it's release is still a ways off.

I could see there being something for privacy and permissions, but at the same time if the system is auto generating categories then it might be really hard to set things as members only because if people use tags and start creating more categories for content that might not be members only.

I'm guessing that they must have come up with a different way to do this. I haven't played with this one myself, but they must've invented a different way to do this, a procedure that probably isn't possible on the likes of phpBB, myBB, XenForo, etc.

Wow this looks awesome! I may have to check this out a bit more in the next few days, for sure.

that's pretty hideous looking......reminds me too much of "Vanilla". And they're charging for this? That makes it even more amusing......

I'm not a huge fan of it. It's just not my style I guess.

Appears to be more of a 'social' thing. Or at least trying to go in the direction of other social sites.

I don't like it.

I like it. It's not so mainstream, it really gives a new flavor to the word "forum", the word that many put into their mind as a stack of links that you can post at. Seems nice, I hope they continue it. Though, I must inquire...why does it say free and open source if it's a paid software?
