This is a common trick of course. Banned member rejoins and starts dropping hints, because after all, what is an obscure victory worth?
What do you do in a case like that? Do you say, fair play, you got away with it, or you outright ban them again, even if you can't 100% prove it's member X reincarnated?
I've had someone get around bans, and usually they've been easy to spot. I ban them immediately as soon as I discover it and have enough proof it's the same person.
I check all new member IP's against those stored already, plus if you ban a member and they rejoin to bypass the ban generally you find the writing style is the same.
Yep, all the time. Depending upon the forum I am on, and what they were banned for, I'll usually just let them be on the new account and add them to a watch list that monitors their PM's and posts for anything. If they are going to get around their ban and for something not as serious as they could have been banned for, it's not worth my time banning them and investigating every ban evade that comes my way.
I'll say I play pretty fair, if they can ban evade they're going to evade every ban you give them. 😛
I've seen a few members who tried to avoid their bans, and it was pretty easy to find out they had returned under a new name. It's a waste of time and just not worth it. If anything, it makes their original account hard to get back. 😛
other times I just had a hunch but couldn't prove it was the same person. I suppose if they're behaving the next time around there isn't much I can do.
So far I currently have one member who has done this. He talks about his first account as if they are friends. I basically decided to let him have this account but he already has a warning on the new account. 😛 Just gonna go through the same warn system.
I don't think it's a big deal. As long as they don't go around breaking the rules on their new account. Perhaps they learned their lesson and will behave better.
It more so depends on why the member was banned and if they are starting any trouble on their new accounts. I've let a few people slip through and continue to be members but as soon as they do what they originally did wrong, I tend to only give them 1 warning and they have a 2nd chance and if they do something again they'll get banned once more without any further chances on my forum.
