Have you had members who had evaded their ban?

At the moment, I am quite lucky. I haven't had any members on my forum which have evaded their ban.

Some, not all members will evade a ban by making a new account with a proxy, VPN, and fake email account. They also do this beforehand should they ever get banned, that way staff doesn't suspect anyone. It is kind of strange that someone new suddenly joins right after you ban their account.

I've been on both ends of this. I've run forums where I've been forced to ban members and then they've made further accounts to evade the ban, and I've also been the banned member who is creating new accounts to avoid his ban. It's a pain in the ass but usually I would say I would monitor the new account... if they aren't doing anything wrong, then what harm is there in letting them stay until they do do something wrong. 🙂

Oh so...so many times.

While technology is getting better and better and proxies and VPN's are becoming more and more popular, it's just a matter of time before people start evading their ban. For me usually I ban the account and that's it, if they create a new account we simply monitor it (like we have no idea we know about it) and if they act up it's a ban instead of a warning or reminder. If you are going to ban a ban evader, you either ban them like no ones business or leave them alone until they show their hand. It's what I see anyway. 😛

Yep, and after IP banning they would use proxies. I now have a no VPN-proxy plugin, among other behavioral plugins, so it hasn't happened much lately.

Why did you do that?

Yes, and I have done this on a couple of forums. I did it here a couple of times but there's no point as banning people these days is quicker than signing up 😛

At first it might seem that with proxies, VPNs, and fake emails, members can bypass bans very easily. One of the problems though is that when a member is banned, they cannot return to a forum under their true identify. They have to pretend they're something they're not unless they want to be banned again. And that really isn't a way to use a forum, in my opinion. And that's the main reason why most banned members never make a full return under new aliases. Using a forum is all about being you. And if you've been banned, that's impossible on a site.

This happens all the time for one site I moderate. We have a policy that means we extend the original ban if the user creates another account to bypass it. I just wonder why they're bothering to keep making new accounts, usually just to flame the staff member who banned them. If you were banned it's for a good reason, and if you deserved you should take the time away to realise it's not okay to do what you did (like rule break).

Because they're immature kids. :great:
I was one once.

Yes, many times, even on FP. :O I find it quite annoying, it really isn't that hard to find the ban evader normally. Here's how bans should work, IMO: every ban should have an end date (even if it's a year out (unless the member has been banned multiple times, is a threat to your members; scamming, hacking, sexual harassment, ect)), a member can appeal the ban at the end of the ban term; and every duplicate account/evasion account should increase the ban time.

Yes I completely agree John! I do not believe permanent bans are necessary. The only time a permanent ban is justified, imo, is when it's an alt created for ban evasion or a troll account that's only been malicious. Appealing bans is a great feature, and even for permanent ban for the case of trolling or serious malicious intent, if there's reason enough to believe a user has changed then unbanning them shouldn't be a problem (they can jsut be rebanned if they are a problem anyway).

I haven't encountered this situation....yet. Anyone who ended up being banned, stayed away. It's just a hassle and takes up admins/mods valuable time if anyone attempted to return using extreme measures. They must be really desperate. 😛
