I think it depends on your audience and content and who you are trying to convince to buy your stuff.
For example, if your template looks too "upper class" with pictures of gold bars, pearls, cruise ships, diamonds, and pictures of people wearing gold, drinking wine, and wearing expensive clothing might have a small impact on earnings if you are trying to get affiliate leads for discount clothing, and coupons for food at a super market.
It would be like Wal-Mart playing classical Instrumental music, having nice carpet or shiny waxed hard wood floor, and selling Rolex Gold watches since many people who shop at wal-mart go there for the inexpensive prices not the great shopping experience.
