I don't have this problem with my forum, but if I do, how should I tell them to post a topic or msg? how do I actually get 'em to post?

Post a varied selection of topics and try to make them interesting to encourage people to reply to them (not like post your post count etc). Discussions/debates can be quite good to encourage users to participate. If one of your quiet members feels strongly about the subject then they will be more likely to start joining in and returning to give their replies.

Content content content. If you have that you will get members.
However if you want to push them per say to post. Download a mod that gives a small message to members and put a text like hey you are inactive please post around.

This is actually a good problem to have, having loads of people show up is good because at least your site is known. Yeah just post more interesting topics, and post polls too. Polls seem to get people to do stuff on your forum.

Contests always seem to do the trick, and make great topics which will engage your member base, also try and get some post exchanges or packages which will make your forum seem more active.

As people have already mentioned some of choices are creating threads with polls, intresting threads, and contest. Another one I was kinda juust thinking about is what if you added a really cool plugin that you can have them earn points and they can buy stuff... So newspoints. I'm not sure what forum software you have but ya.

I have the same issue with my website blog page. I am going to try a competition pretty soon and see if that encourages people to actually write something! Cheers for that.
