HD video support in Linux

Anyone using Linux can you confirm whether you are able to play HD videos in Amazon Prime or Netflix?

All my videos play in SD instead of HD, i am using GTX 1050 2GB version with latest drivers.

Which distro? Using Firefox or Chrome?

When my media server was running Ubuntu (16.04 I think?) I was playing HD Netflix and Youtube using a GT 610, which is far less powerful than a GTX 1050.

What's your internet speed like? Perhaps Netflix and Amazon are turning down the quality to match your connection.

I am using Solus OS Budgie Version, and i use both Firefox and Chrome. Kernel is 5.0

Admittedly I havent had any experience with Solus yet, so I can't speak for its capabilities. I'd assume it'd be able to handle HD video with no problem.

Hows your internet speed? Over 7mbps?

I am using 30Mbps plan, with 3.5 Mbps up and 4 Mbps down. And Amazon executive said the speed is more sufficient to watch HD videos.

I wouldnt say 4mbps is enough for HD content. I used to work for an ISP and if you got less than 7Mbps, HD content wasn't feasible.

Hmm i used the same speed in Windows and i was able to stream it. Plus the trailers in Amazon Prime play in HD but not the movie or videos.

Then that rules out any issue with the hardware, OS or browser. If there was a hardware or software limitation or fault with your machine, the ads wouldn't play in HD either. I have noticed specifically with Amazon that the connection seems to be a bit iffy and my quality goes from HD to 240p-esque on a 320mbps DL. I don't believe my ISP has an Amazon Prime cache server like it does with Netflix so maybe that has something to do with it.

Anyway, it still seems like its due to your connection. Is this machine a laptop or a desktop? Are you using WiFi or an Ethernet connection? If its WiFi, perhaps the WiFi driver works differently than it did when it was running via Windows?

I am using Desktop and using a router to pc connection. I checked with Amazon and they clearly stated we don't support Linux at this moment. So all the videos play in SD only.

I reinstalled my Linux OS too, still nothing. I better live with SD.

I am not sure in case of other distro. Have you tried Elementry? Or maybe Mint?

No, i tried Ubuntu and Solus alone now.
