If someone is elected as a member of parliament and they die or resign then they need to find someone to take their place so they need to have an election to let people vote.

America is different I believe but a lot of Commonwealth countries do it.

Talking about it, we won anyway. YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH - Now, a day later, we have another by-election That Has just appeared in another location, with 30 days to get that up and running.
