Hi there,

I was looking to start a forum for our YouTube channel. We get atleast 1,000 comments on each video so I assume a forum would be quite active. So could I get suggestions on how to start, where to start, and everything to do?

the first place o start is getting yourself a TLD. One god place to get one is www.godaddy.com or you can go to www.namecheap.com. If you are not able to afford one there you can go to www.freeavailabledomains.com and get one there.

The next thing you will need is a good host. I use Empire Hosting for mine, https://empirehostings.com/shop/aff.php?aff=083. You can see more options when you click on shop at the top. EH ha self installers that will install the forum software for you, as long as it is in their list.

If there is anything else just send me a PM

Empire Hosting already has those 3 in their auto installers.

In my opinion I believe phpbb is easier, but everyone has their own opinions about everything. The best way to find what is easier for you to to try them out like I did. I have tried quite a few and have always came back to phpbb

I will be sure to look at my options, very confusing!

It sure is, but when you get the hang of something just stick to that.

Angie I use MyBB as I find it easy to use and I am still learning
I have only being running a forum about a year now and if this old lady can do it so can you

When deciding which host to use, it may be better when starting out to choose a host that can also supply the domain name, that will make the actual set up a lot easier and quicker, than using a separate domain registrar.

I would also invest some time in learning what all these acronyms mean, it can get quite confusing.

If you want to start a forum with little or no cost, the best option would be Zetaboards, you register a TLD ( top level domain), and you get free hosting, in return to pay for the site, Zetaboard put adverts on your site.

* A top level domain is one that terminates in .co, .co.uk, .net, .com etc, a top level domain would look like this http://www.yoursitename.com

Hope this helps.

I think you'd be surprised how inactive the forum would be. The reason you get comments on Youtube is because there are no barriers to entry when making comments. The comments box is right there so it is quick and easy. I would really give it some thought before putting a lot of time and energy into it.

Well see, I would turn of registering, it would be a guest only forum, except for Admins so it would be like a categoried comment section. I'm not looking for constructed posts, just a place for thoughts 🙂

I appreciate all the comments on my channel as well, thank you! 🙂

The only problem about making it open to guests is that you may get a bunch of spam.
Perhaps there is a plugin to allow users to register with their Youtube account much like there is an option for that with Facebook?

Godaddy is awesome.

You can host Simple Machines and PhpBB software apps for free as well as other nice additions such as Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress and a lot more. All you do is log on to the hosting section and click "install app"; it's that easy 😛. I'd suggest taking a moment to check those names out. They're quite easy to understand and quality software.

Godaddy: http://godaddy.com
Simple Machine: http://simplemachines.org
PhpBB: http://phpbb.com
Joomla!: http://joomla.org
Drupal: http://drupal.org
Wordpress: http://wordpress.org

Good luck!

That's a good option, however I don't want to split comments up, so I think I may find a way to better organize this

Could someone PM me their email if they could help with this? Looking to set this up soon
