Once you've downloaded phpBB3, you will need to open up the .zip folder and drag the phpBB3 folder to your desktop. Once you do this, you will need to open your FTP client, I recommend FileZilla. You will need to connect to your server.
When you open up File Zilla, you'll need to click File ---> Site Manager.
A window should open that appears like this.
Once you've connected to your FTP program, you will need to open your phpBB3 folder. You will see "Local Site" on your left hand side, scroll up, click desktop, then double click the phpBB3 folder. After that, it should appear.
Then, right click each folder and click upload. Once you've uploaded all the folders into your root directory, or the folder you have specified phpBB3 to be installed in. You will need to run the install script. Which in my case, it will be http://testebsite.com/testforum
Once you've loaded the URL. You will need to create a mySQL database, which holds all your users information, your forums statistics and so forth.
I will walk you through the steps on creating a database, a database user and connecting the database and the user together.
First, lets login to your control panel, using your hosting login credentials.
Once you've logged into your control panel, you will have to scroll down, you will see mySQL databases.
Click mySQL databases, you will see "New Database". Type in what you want your database called, for example, we'll call the database testforum.
Click "Create Database". Now you've setup the database name. Now we'll have to setup a user and then link both the database and the user together. Scroll down and you'll see "Add New Users". Type in what you want the user called, for example, we'll use "test". You will need to select a password for the user. Once you've done that, click submit.
You will need to scroll down once again, you will see "Add User to database" and in my case, my database name is testforum and my user is test. You will then have to click "add", and it will bring you to a permissions page.
Click the check box at the top beside "All Permissions". Then click Make Changes. Once you've done this, you will need to go to your phpBB3 installation page and go through each step until you hit the "Database Settings" page. Now, you will need to use your "Database Name", "User" and "Password" that you created in your cpanel.
For example,
Mine is
Database name: misty_testforum
Database user: misty_test
Password: coolio (example)
Once you've filled out the database name, user and password, click submit. You will receive this page.
This means, that with the data that you provided (Database Name, User and password) have connected to eachother, meaning it is now storing your users, statistics and such.
Click, "Proceed to next step".
Now, you will need to create your Administrator Name, password, and email address. which is whatever you want it to be. Example:
You will be brought to the configuration file, click "proceed to next step".
You will be brought to the advanced settings page, scroll down to the bottom and click "proceed to next step".
You will be brought to the create database tables page, (this means it's storing the phpBB3 tables into your database". Click proceed to next step.
You will be brought to the last page of the install asking you to remove the /install folder from your root directory or wherever you installed phpBB3.
Login to your FTP program and remove the /install directory, then go back to the Final Stage page and click login. Now, you have successfully installed phpBB3 and you can now start configuring your board, by adding forums, categorys, whatever you wish.
