My dad is in his 70s and I'm finding that he has more difficulties remembering what to do when something happens to his computer. Last night he struggled to find the Delete key when I told him to do Ctrl Alt Del.

What tips do you have when working with older people in helping them learn or use their computer systems? I'm long distance from my dad so everything is verbal but I'd like to maybe create some posters to hang in his office (when I go to visit) for him to use when I'm not in the area.

I used to help using Team viewer.

I've considered using something like that so I can just get into his computer and do what I need but right now his computer is crawling because of either a virus or something is trying to sync and it's not working right.

Maybe stickers or color the keys which are used frequently which will help them to identify what is what.

Well, seeing as your Father is an old person, he most likely won't be used to Technology such as PCs. So, you'll have to teach him them.

If your Father knows how to turn the PC on and off then that's a good start for an elderly person. Next, he'll need to know his way around the OS(The abomination that is MS Windows 10 in this case).

Teach him how to work the Start-Menu first and how to navigate through it. After that, make him open-up a Web Browser(I suggest Mozilla Firefox because then your Father won't get spied on[Just make sure you configure Firefox to block Trackers though and stop Mozilla collecting Data]). When he opens-up the Web Browser, tell him to search-up something into the Search-Box using the Keyboard. This will help him learn to work out the Keyboard. And just so you know, tell him to search-up something that is relevant or easy(Like the local News or Weather for today). Then, after he's done, tell him to click on one of the Links displayed on the Search-Engine so he's taken to a Page. Once he's done looking at the Page, teach him how to exit the Web Browser. You may do anything else after that like how to use the File Explorer, change some PC Settings and learn how to turn off or lock the PC via the Start-Menu when he's not using it.

I also suggest just keeping a simple Pin or Password for him(So, 1234 for example. That's easy).

I wish the best of luck to your Father learning how to use the Computer. Just make sure not to get too technical(Like me : p) and try and keep it simple and do it at a slow and easy pace. Once he's learned something(Like the Keyboard), maybe help him memorize the Keys so he doesn't forget where they are(Although, it may occasionally happen. Don't worry though, the same happens to me). Another thing I'd suggest doing is getting an Anti-Virus like McAfee or Norton. Seeing as you mentioned that he might have a Virus, it's best to get one for him(Means that once his PC is out of the Repair-Shop, they won't say: "Oh, there is about 2314 Viruses on it."). Again, best of luck.

I don't necessarily see that helping him. A Key on a Keyboard is a Key on a Keyboard and they all look identical, just with a different letter, number or symbol.
Windows 10 occasionally hangs a lot due to the updates
@Lämmchen, that's one thing you need to keep in mind. Tell your Father that the PC won't always be able to be used for sometime if he sees something about an Update. But from my experience, most Windows Updates have been pretty fast. It's only the Feature-Updates where it takes a decade.

Oops forgot to mention my dad has had a computer for 15 years now. He's forgetting some of the things we've taught him and asks the same questions time and time again. He's using Win10 right now and he also has a smart phone that he can look up things if he needs to. I think he just panics and is afraid he'll mess things up. That's the problem that a lot of older people have, they fear that if they press a button the entire computer will be dead for all eternity.

Don't worry, we all experience those moments of panic in case we end up destroying the damn thing. Especially myself(I'm a new GNU/Linux User so whenever I see a Command that you put into Terminal, I make sure it's safe). As long as your Father knows what he's doing and has a Smartphone to help him look up things then he should most likely be fine. You'll just need to answer all of his questions though.

Perhaps a keyboard with larger keys and quick-link icons saved to the desktop. Most of the elders I've done IT consulting for only used the computer for a few very specific reasons/websites, so I'd simply create icons which they could use to easily navigate around.
