1. Clean up junk – Junk files come in from the internet or through external storage devices, stay in your computer and compromise its performance. It is recommended that users try to detect all junk files and applications and try to remove them instantly.

2. Clean up registry – Your system and application registry file entries can also slow down your overall system speed. Cleaning corrupt and faulty registry files improves your Windows computer’s system and application performances.

3. Defragmentation – Defragmentation is the process of organizing fragmented system, registry and application files. Defragmenting your disk and registry will definitely increase its performance by speeding up slow response times and giving better overall performance.

4. Startup Management – Too many startup applications are detrimental to your Windows PC’s performance. Most users don’t need so many applications to start up when their PC boots up, as it just leads to unnecessary CPU and RAM consumption. Disabling some of your startup applications will help your best perform faster.

5. Stop background processes – Background processes sacrifice your RAM and system resources and restrict your PC from providing good quality system and application performance. Users must get information about all their background processes and try to stop the ones that are unnecessary. This will free up RAM and increase PC speed.

6. Clean up desktop – Windows users often copy a lot of their document files and folders on their Windows desktops. This slows down their system drive and leads to problems such as lagging and freezing. It is recommended that you move all your document files from the desktop to a different location (preferably on a non-system drive.

7. Edit Windows Performance Options – Windows computers offer customizable performance settings, which can be tweaked according to the user’s preference. You can edit and save your performance settings from the Windows Control Panel.

8. Update drivers – Outdated drivers can lead to slow PC system and application performance. Users should regularly check their driver versions and install any available updates, to get better application performance.

Performing all these steps can increase your Windows PC’s performance dynamically.

Thanks for the tips, for the first 4 or so I find Ccleaner works well for those tasks. The rest are more manual.

Be extremely careful stopping background processes... Some of them are vital to proper functioning of your computer and stopping them can lead to crashes. Also if you have over 8GB of RAM there really isn't any point in worrying about your RAM usage by the OS/programs. I mean what's the point in having that much if you don't let programs use it?

Though this kind of ties into a couple parts (1,4,5 and 6...) it's a good idea, especially on new pre-made systems, to go through with a fine toothed comb and remove the bloatware. Things that manufacturers install which slow your system down. (EX- Asus cloud service.) Many times these programs aren't that beneficial, can cause security holes (Lenovo's Superfish disaster anyone?) or you just have no interest/desire to use them.

Most of these tips are outdated, I think. Defragmentation for example is no longer a serious issue, as modern operating systems either schedule the process automatically (as Windows Vista+ does) or eliminate the need altogether (as Unix-type operating systems such as Mac OS do).

Slow machines are usually caused by failing hardware and bloatware from my experience. Fine-tuning the OS is just a band-aid. If your hard-drive is going bad, then it's going bad. 😛 And if your machine has too much installed on it, you either need to uninstall some stuff or upgrade to a better machine.

Thank you for sharing! I would like to add some thoughts
1. Close System Tray Programs
Many applications tend to run in the system tray, or notification area. These applications often launch at startup and stay running in the background but remain hidden behind the up arrow icon at the bottom-right corner of your screen. Click the up arrow icon near the system tray, right-click any applications you don’t need running in the background, and close them to free up resources.
2. Disable Startup Programs
Better yet, prevent those applications from launching at startup to save memory and CPU cycles, as well as speed up the login process.

On Windows 8, 8.1, and 10, there’s now a startup manager in the Task Manager you can use to manage your startup programs. Right-click the taskbar and select “Task Manager” or press Ctrl+Shift+Escape to launch it. Click over to the Startup tab and disable startup applications you don’t need. Windows will helpfully tell you which applications slow down your startup process the most.

3. Scan for Malware and Adware
There’s also a chance your computer is slow because malicious software is slowing it down and running in the background. This may not be flat-out malware — it may be software that interferes with your web browsing to track it and add additional advertisements, for example.

To be extra safe, scan your computer with an antivirus program. You should also scan it with Malwarebytes, which catches a lot of “potentially unwanted programs” (PUPs) that most antivirus programs tend to ignore. These programs try to sneak onto your computer when you install other software, and you almost certainly don’t want them.

Thanks I do most of these already but the one I dont I think Ill defo start as I had a computer nightmare earlier this week 🙂

Partitioning your hard drive is also another factor. Keep your active partition only for your operating system and software installs. This will help your computer work faster and better.

Thanks a lot for sharing these useful tips for getting windows PC speed.
Update your computer software when needed. Install ad blocker on your PC to stay away from unwanted adds. These ads are big scam for your computer.

Thanks for the tips I might use these because my computer IS pretty slow. xD
