I understood the first one and found it mildly amusing (albeit I have heard many similar jokes before) but I did think I missed something funny in the second one although clearly I didn't and it was just unfunny.

It's phrase association. I think it's kind of on purpose. You say something funny, and then something obvious, and it's meant to make the first one sound more funny. This one, however, just failed. 😛
