Most of the time, one does not have an opportunity to help find their own replacement. I’m currently in this position where I’m working part time for my outgoing company to help transition them to a new HR Specialist. I’ve had the unique opportunity to run the search for my replacement. I’m torn between wanting to phase out and also wanting the right person to step in and continue the progress I saw and helped facilitate. Of course, the additional pay is a nice bonus.

If you had this opportunity, would you do it? What stipulations or timelines would you impose? Would you do it in any position or just certain ones?

I helped to train the person who would take over for me and I had so much fun. I love helping people to learn and show all my little tricks on being efficient and they're grateful for the time savers I can give to them. It was a Project Admin position for a global corporation and I'd train that guy again in a heartbeat.

That’s kind of where I’m at. I’ll get to help train the new guy and they are keeping me on PRN indefinitely. I really like it because 1) it makes me feel really valued and 2) I know I have a position of my new job doesn’t work out. I foresee it working out given their retention rates and seriousness about hiring practices (I’m in the corporate HR group of 5 and do the recruiting lol). It also helps me because the fresh college grad I brought on as my training coordinator will continue to be supported and I’ll get to keep somewhat of an eye on his development.

Is your new position within the same company?

No, a long seated company down the road from me sought me out through an old application and kept making increasingly good offers. Eventually, I couldn’t say no lol.

The old company though wants to keep me on retainer and will build a position for me to get me back if I wanted too. I deal a lot with the union labor relationships and disciplinary processes. It’s a 25 billion dollar company and they’re really big on retaining talent. I’d still be there if the branch was closer to my house

That's pretty awesome to be in such high demand! When I lived near Chicago a decade or so ago, I used to get job offers quite often and it felt really good to be wanted 🙂

This is my first time I’ve had this happen minus teaching positions where I was the only qualified candidate lol. It feels pretty good. It’s true what they say about your 30s, you start feeling more secure whereas the 20s are all about figuring out what you want to do in life

Wait until you get to your 40s! That was the best decade for me 🙂

I really didn't want to say this, but I've thought about handing ownership to someone else, especially when later in the year I'll be busier in the real life and, I don't have much mental acuity to be an admin anymore. This may happen in February or March, it really depends.

May the forces be with you. The most important thing is arranging and making sure you hand it over to a capable hand.

Well I have one name in mind, just in case the worst ever happens and feel that I can't run or maintain a forum as efficiently as I used to anymore.

I'm currently in this situation right now. I am looking for a replacement in my working place because I want to relocate back to another state. I have tried all I could to get someone that can do more better or even still, I will give a helping hand to train the person but none is forthcoming.

It would be a really nice thing to hire my replacement. It really is nice when you have put in so much to create a standard for your position and role.
