"A visible hits counter is a measure of how unpopular your site/forum is". Does anyone else agree with me? What it really is, is a counter that compares you with another site, and so there will always be a site that has higher counts than you, so it measures popularity, but negatively.
And, so if you disagree with me, what does your hits counter say? 100, 1000, 10000?
I think if you're going to use one and your stats are a bit low, you might as well tweak the number a bit. Like add a couple thousand here and there to make your site look active.
They can be quite handy for statistical purposes for the site owner and some staff, but for general public use, I say no. 😉
Honestly, I don't register at a site with a hit counter. Hit counters are random and useless. The real important statistic on a forum or the like is the amound of registered members, and then the amount of posts.
I'm surprised at the number of people who would not join a forum with a visible hit counter. You learn something new everyday.
Would you feel the same about a site that provides a link to their stats? Some sites do this so that potential advertisers can get an understanding of how much traffic the site is receiving.
