Holiday vs Christmas

I'm sure almost everybody here has heard about these two. "Political Correctness" tell us to say "Happy Holidays" when in fact it has been "Merry Christmas" for about 2000 years.
I can't stand people saying Happy Holidays, and asking me about my Holiday Shopping. It's Christmas Shopping and Merry Christmas.

For the people who think that "Holiday" isn't religious, it actually is. It comes from Holy day ~razz~

Where do you stand on this?

I just ignore it, I never say happy holidays when I am writing a card or speaking to someone. I have always said merry Christmas.

I can see why it gets called Happy Holidays though.

I call it Happy Holidays. Im not religious, so ive always called it that. It doesnt bother me to hear it called the other, I just dont use it when I speak. Come to think of it, wasnt there a court case to get "Merry Christmas" banned form public school in the states awhile back? Silly thing to fight about, must be about the money -roll-

As I am quite religious, that is why I have such a strong opinion on it. If I see somebody who is Jewish, (though I am not Jewish)I will happily tell them "Happy Hanukkah". I think too many people seem to be "offended" if one were to tell them something and they be of a different religion. I wouldn't be offended if somebody told me "Happy Hanukkah" or even "Happy Kwanzaa" (though it's quite easy to see I am not black), as they took time to wish me something.

I just do what the others do. Merry Christmas is to normal. We say Happy holidays cause christmas makes us happy and its a holiday

It's Christmas, plain and simple. No need to call it anything else. So I wish people a merry Christmas, or happy Christmas.. etc..

I'm Jewish and I sometimes say Merry Christmas just because most people in my area are Christian.

I can see both sides of the fence on this situation. I can see that people don't want to have "Merry Christmas" said to them if in fact they do not celebrate it or find Christmas offensive for some reason. However, it's a shame that it's becoming more and more "correct" to refer to the "birth of our savior" as just another "holiday". Don't get me wrong, I'm not religious whatsoever, I'm just the devil's advocate over here. =]

I think that if people are offended by "Merry Christmas" they can go suck a potato because it's a polite gesture, regardless of what it means literally.

At the official level, it should be Happy Holidays. The President shouldn't have a huge" Merry Christmas " banner across the White House, and no government official or representative should be saying " Merry Christmas " either. It's not appropriate.

I have no problem saying Merry Christmas, and I usually never say Happy Holidays, but Teachers and other public people should be required to say Holidays.

They say happy holidays b/c not everyone celebrates christmas and its not fair to the people who dont to always hear merry christmas. I personally dont really care, its whatever you want to say. I do think its disrespectfull to say merry christmas to a jew or something tho.

I really think this whole argument over HH or MC is stupid. There is a reason people say Happy Holidays, not everyone celebrates Christmas.... Happy Holidays is a general greeting.

People who say that are doing so because they are moving on from the narrow minded "religious rejection" of the past, and are basically saying "whatever holiday you celebrate, even if you don't celebrate any, I am wishing you happy times."

I personally don't think it always matters, if you are around people you know are Christians, then fine, say whatever you want. But when you are talking to someone you don't know, being respectful of another's religion is a good way of showing fair-minded intentions and will earn someone else's respect.

Why do you care what other people say? If you like to say Merry Christmas, then say it. But there is no point in bashing other people for saying Happy Holidays.

Happy Holidays is a good thing to say to people that you don't know, just to be respectful. But if you want to say Merry Christmas, then fine, that's your right. But it's everyone else's right to say Happy Holidays.

Saying Merry Christmas is saying that you wish someone a Merry Christmas. Saying Happy Holidays means you are wishing someone a Happy Holiday season, not just one Holiday, but the whole season.
