I've stayed out of the loop for quite awhile, what's Host Gator like these days? How does it rank in terms of speed and uptime and customer service, blah blah, you know, all that jazz.

EIG recently took over HostGator. In the past whenever EIG bought out a company, it's never been a good thing. But let's hope it rather improves Hostgator. When you are comparing web hosting companies, you might think you're comparing different ones but at a lot of times what you're comparing are the same companies in different names such as HostGator, Dream Host, Site5 and bunch more that are owned and operated by EIG.

In terms of how HostGator is, they are a large company so they've got staff members working around clock. Never really had any issues with their support nor did I really hear much. Speed is decent other than during peak hours..which is when you site might come to a crawl.

Their uptime is decent, you'll get downtimes here and there but usually the main problem is the speed. Also, they have very specific and crazy rules & limitations that not many other companies put in place ie: the CPU usage for a shared account is incredibly low. They always seem to somehow find a reason to suspend your account.

For a company such as HG, they are reasonably good.

Pretty sure it's the same as before. I haven't heard anything good about Host Gator in quite a long time. Best bet is to go with a Host that is active within the Hosting Community and know what they are doing.

@Dean@Simplix, Most shared hosts do have a CPU and RAM usage limit because they pack in hundred of clients into one VPS/Dedicated server since most won't actually use a chunck of CPU/RAM.

Hehe, well Host Gator is having uptime issues today. I guess that answers my question.

I've been looking around and it seems as though InMotion hosting is actually pretty good. Their support was good, perhaps took them a little long to respond every time you sent them a message, but according to their support team you have no CPU limit, which is fantastic!

You can get 6-months free (so 50% off) by clicking here http://dw.com.com/redir?destUrl=http%3A ... nelid=6028 since CNET has a deal with them!

I doubt they will allow you to use too much CPU. I am sure they will not allow you to use all the servers CPU or allow you to start affecting other sites by using a fairly large percentage of the CPU. All hosts have a limit on these things otherwise they would lose alot of money with some customers.

I actually reckon they're quite a top-notch company though. They have to call you before they sign you up, which obviously shows they're wanting to talk to customers and aren't just after the money.

I'm sure they'll have a limit, but I would say it's quite a high limit and if they see you using to much they contact you to help you optimize your site. Cool support!

I checked out this claim because it seems completely wrong and it is...

http://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/ ... cpu-graphs

"If your account is consistently going over your CPU limits, a warning email could be dispatched, or a temporary account suspension could be put in place if the usage was extreme enough. "

That makes it seem as if their support is incompetent. I'm sure they have great hosting but there are always CPU limits on a web host. No sane web host is going to allow a customer to take 100% of the servers resources.

Nor 'Unlimited' disk space, Sooner or later they can't add more drives onto a server. Unlimited bandwidth isn't that bad, They probably have a deal for unmetered 100Mbps/1Gbps.

Also the CPU is 'fair use' (Which is common with Shared Hosting, So I wouldn't worry unless you have really unoptimized scripts.)
In some cases if your account is taking up more than its fair share of these resources, it can be detrimental to the other users on the server and our system administration team might need to step in with a temporary account suspension until you can correct the issues causing excessive usage.

It's actually the whole Datacenter for EIG(EGI?), Even Bluehost was/is down.

Seems to me like HostGator has been going downhill lately. I've never used them but I haven't heard too many positive comments either. Here it is, mid-2013, and host gator still seems to be getting negative reviews.

Agreed on that. Since acquired by EIG, then all things went south. But hey, their price packages are still tempting. 🙂

Their pricing is really good for the features they are offering. And shared SSL is pretty tempting as well, however I do not think I'll be going with them. Haha. Inmotion is a awesome company, their support is pretty top notch as well.

It's 2015 and HostGator is kickin'. I have never had an issue with them, even when the direction of the company was up in the air a few years ago. Their servers have been fast whenever I've used them as a host. They were also very responsive to any issues I had.
