I signed up for Hostgator thinking that it was pretty reasonably priced and provided a lot of great support. I do not expect much traffic for the first year so it seemed logical to just go with the shared hosting plan and change to something more advanced after some time.

I have had a lot of issues with database errors, site crashes and lag time though. Hostgator says everything seems fine on their end and that it is a local issue. Should I look into changing companies? I already paid for a year of shared hosting 🙁

You can check out with their support staff if they can resolve the issue for your server. Usually bigger names have good number of clients to manage your server individually. But since you are on a shared hosting service, it can be other clients with whom you are sharing the hosting spaces. You really need to check this out with their support staff. And I would recommend you changing to a cheap VPS plan to get a much better service.

HostGator is not the HG that you used to know. HG is now owned by EIG and they are notorious for extremely bad support and overall quality. I would recommend looking up reviews of hosting companies owned by EIG. Have a look for yourself on reviews from hosts owned by them.

What, are you serious? Strange, I have always used Host Gator and I have no problems with them, but this scares me......Damn!

I had tried to talk to support and they only tell them that they do not see any issues. My site went down for 10 minutes one time which was horrible. Other crashes had lasted less than 5 seconds but for the entire site to crash for 10 minutes it logged everyone out and people were messaging me confused.

Currently I'm having site crash after site crash. I spoke with tech support and they are submitting a ticket but the site is down for a third time now. My control panel says:

The MySQL server is currently offline.

Error while connecting to MySQL: Cpanel:😀BI::Mysql connect('','root',...) failed: Too many connections at /usr/local/cpanel/Cpanel/MysqlUtils/Connect.pm line 156 Error while connecting to MySQL: Cpanel:😀BI::Mysql connect('','root',...) failed: Too many connections at /usr/local/cpanel/Cpanel/MysqlUtils/Connect.pm line 156 ...caught

That error means that your server is being over-stressed. Are you on shared hosting? You may need to upgrade to a VPS, if you haven't already, or possibly a better web host.

I am still within 45 days, just barely at least. I ran a database repair and the error hasn't happened since. I really don't want to pay out more money for hosting since it's just a hobby site for me. If the site were to actually grow to become an actually business because of dumb luck it would make sense to invest money like that. Currently it's just a forum for friends and a couple family members of mine. I already paid through the year for shared hosting plan with host gator and I'll probably just stick it out for now and change hosts for the following year or just before the year ends.

If you're just running it as a hobby, it doesn't sound like your site is too large. Do you appear to be nearing the allocated capacity of your Hostgator plan?

I need to check. I should really be looking into that. It said unlimited everything when I signed up but I have learned that isn't really true. I did see something in the terms about sites actually not using more than a certain percentage of server space with shared plans.

I've started deleting some junk from my site and I hope that helps. It's a really small forum with just enough regular friends of mine posting to keep things fun but it's definitely not a major forum so I'm really surprised it's having trouble with the hosting plan. Some o my friends asked too help with fees even though I'd already paid and so I have a couple "paid" members but that's not really enough to upgrade the server. I told them I would look into it but really only if people wanted to pitch in to make that happen. There's only so much I'm willing to pay for. Currently it cost my about as much as a Netflix subscription each month ya know.

I totally understand. Sorry I can't be more help. Hopefully you are able to figure it out and cleaning out some things will improve loading speed. Keep us updated! 🙂

Thanks. I'm hoping that running the database repair program helps. Host gator also sent a ticket in for a senior admin to review and I completely closed a game program that I had been getting repeated server error logs from.

I've been using HostGator for my site for the past couple years, and while I've had random errors and databases being down for a little while due to high traffic (before I'd done a bunch of optimization of my code), overall everything's been peachy. Not sure why you'd have so many errors with just a few people on the forum, that seems like there's something going on there, so I really hope things work out for you and you figure it out.

I'm on HostGator, and have been for a very long time. I've really never had an issue with their service or any of the above described issues.

What plans are yall using?

Shared hosting plan. I only decided to privately host because hosting wasn't really that costly. I actually pay more for Netflix ya know. There was a big initial payment to get the software and stuff which I had tied to avoid with open source options but really it wasn't much and it's been really fun. I can't really justify spending a lot on more professional hosting options for a hobby site.

-- 08 Apr 2015, 01:46 --

It may have been the quiz master add-on though. It was causing a lot of server errors and I finally disabled it. Then I ran a database repair and the site has been up ever since and I haven't had any serious lag that I've noticed which was another issue. I feel like the site was experiencing these problems before I added QM though. I can't remember exactly.

If you site crashes thats bad news to your customers.
based on the review I have seen here, I would suggest you to look for other hosting companies. Ask the hosting company if the billing is Prorated, it it is you can expect refund if you are changin the service.

When you are trying for a new hosting company, pay for only 1 month and then see how they perform. If you like the services you can extend the duration.

Currently I have a dedicated server connection problems with database, I never had. So i feel it is upto the server company how they maintain.

They offer tons of discounts at user sign up. Additionally, they have been around for some tome now and have proven themselves already.
