Why are hotlinks bad? I had read it can steal your bandwidth. If that’s the case, how can you prevent it from happening? Are there any red flags a forum owner or site can watch out for?

I believe hotlinks are bad because you as the owner of the forum have no control over the hot-linked file that may be there and that can, in turn, lead you to have legal issues. It also means you would be leeching off another person's website and using their bandwidth which then will increase their hosting costs.

There are many ways that you can prevent hotlinking. I have found a site here with a few ways

Don't hotlink to a 3rd party you don't trust and hasn't given you permission, but hotlinking is an integral part of the internet. Lots of services expect you to hotlink. Imgur expects you to hotlink, and over the years they've proven themselves trustworthy to ensure that images will not be swapped out for a given URL.

There are also CDNs which you have your own control over with assets that get hosted on 3rd party domains. Even though you have control over it, it's still a hotlink and you still need to trust that they provide a safe and secure service.

As of yesterday, I swapped the default Jcink jQuery file with the jQuery.com CDN file. Very useful to not have to re-host the script and it has all the uptime in the world.
