I'd welcome any suggestions you might have as to how I can get more people to post an ad on http://www.adslotto.com

It's really simple to post an ad or link, members can do it with their first post. The plan is to build a really large classifieds forum, with a huge number of ads, similar in some ways to CraigsList.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Don't use XenForo?

The idea would be to be different, right? I've noticed a LOT of admin forums, and sites like this that are running XenForo. It becomes an eyesore after a while.

Something I'm thinking about this: If you want such a large number of advertising 'topics', would a forum really be the right kind of site?

Thanks R44, I like XenForo because it is so fast, which is important for a site where a lot of ads will be posted in a short space of time.

I don't think changing forum software is going to make the difference between success and failure.

I wanted to make it a forum so that members could also have some discussion. But you could have a point, why do you think a forum might not be suitable?

It's your site - I just hate seeing so many administration and advertising related sites running the *same* thing.

I just think if you're trying to create a classified ad site (which you want to have a large number of ads) a website, maybe just with a few affiliate links on the homepage, and maybe random ads that are in categories? So when you refresh the page you get different ads, but keep it to something like 5 on a page? Just an idea.

I prefer forum as the discussions keeps rolling new comers will be encouraged to join and post ads.

But do you not think topics would get buried if there were a lot?

Which encourages users to stay active and come back to bump their topics, once allowed by Fergal's rules of course.

You do need a different theme though, Fergal. The default one isn't much to look at. There are some nice free themes, and I'm sure if you're going to be paying $1 million, you can afford a nice premium theme. 😉

@Flux, I will consider that as the site grows and develops.

@Geoffrey, this is the first time I've ever run a site on XF. I want to become more familiar with the software and how it operates, before I start customising it.

Thanks everyone.

You can't bump topics in the ad forum to the top of the list.
@Fergal - should people just re-post their ad? Or will there be a bump button?

Anyway, why not insert a banner ad on FP and BAF? ...maybe even purchase advertisements on Digital Point Forums (or make money online forums) advertising the million dollar contest.

Yes, you are correct Marc, ads no longer get bumped when they are replied to and members are welcome to re-post their ads.

Thanks also for those other suggestions, I will consider them.

Are you sure that's a good idea to allow the "same" ads over and over and over?

It would make reaching 1 million ads a faster possibility.

To answer the question in the OP... Do more then just the 1 contest of 1 million. Host minor contest inbeteen.

Like a refferal contest.

To get more posts make it appealing for people to post an ad on your forum. Make it worth it to them.

This can be achieved by giving your forum alot of exposure.

To be honest I'm not 100% sure, but we will see how it works out and tweak it later if need be.

@master412160 we currently have smaller contests running. I do like the idea of a referral contest and will consider that. Thanks for the suggestion.

This is sort of getting to me here...are you a millionaire, Fergal? o:

Sorry, I'm not one to offer any ideas on how to get AdsLotto more popular, I'm not very good at that. Good luck, though!

Well advertising always helps. The million dollar contest is enough to attract a lot of people, if advertised in the right places.

Well, ForumPromotion is one place, you are already advertising on it though 😛
Digital Point is another. I am sure a quick Google search will reveal a lot of things.
