I know that there are modifications out there which will be installed once i find somebody who will do.
I have banned a list of emails from stopforumspam.com but I keep getting spammers.Mostly who have not yet posted but there usernames and emails show they are spammers.I want to know anything I do in the acp which will really help prevent spammers/spam bots from registering and posting.
I currently have put image verification on.

I am currently reading http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=1437125

I've had a few spammers lately...persitent ones too and I had to go as far as moderating any new user. This works fine, as long as you are on your forum a lot as you don;t want members waiting as they will go elsewhere. As people above have said, CAPTCHA, e-mail validating, moderating users and IP bans. Hope they go away 🙂

If it's a forum set it so only admins can activate accounts, I had to do this on an old forum I had they can't spam as they can't get in

Yeah. Spam Bots are really annoying. CAPTCHA is a pretty good tool for catching them in the act. e-mail validation, and code verification are also +'s. Plus some IP and Moderating Bans.

It is highly annoying. I often get a lot of WOW bots rolling through.

Another suggestion is to make an improvement on the code validation. (the letters/numbers you have to type in on registering). The harder it is, the less bots will be able to get it. However, it is a pain for users sometimes.

You can always just get the mod from phpbb.com that blocks GMT-12. That stops most spam bots.
