When I first started my forum, it was kind of a promotion forum and a general discussion forum. Since it was my first forum, I really didn't know which was best or how to even run it. Around 3 months later, I turned it into just a general discussion forum because that's really all I wanted to do.

If your niche is something that is uncommon, how'd you chose it?

I picked my niche since I know the most about it, there are tons of other forums inside of my niche but most are WAY TOO broad (go into freshwater, saltwater, and brackish setups), and I felt like by revamping what others have seemed to missed (just doing one type of water) I could improve on it and provide users with the best information around. 🙂

Simple because, the only site that covered anything for my industry was just a link directory. It didn't offer much content for the fans of my industry, but now, I'm a lot more successful than their link directory and we provide our fans with way more relevant, unique and quality content than they've ever provided. They opened in 1996 though.

I choose a niche which I often use, which is the online tools niche.
I use many online tools, so I know what to add to my site.

It's something I enjoy doing most of the time and I can talk a lot about.

Not something I can see myself ever stopping.

My forums niche combined two of my common interests and knowledge areas. It's easier when your forums topics is something that you have a genuine ardor for.

My niche was basically just chosen through my interests. I really enjoy general discussion forums so I figured it would only be proper for me to open one.

We came across a very common problem that everyone hates and created a business around it. Although there are many similar businesses in our industry (we have to do with finding apartments), no one has tried making the problem easier the way we are, so we've found our niche. It turns out that we are very complimentary to our competitors.
While passion for an industry is always a bonus, I think that being passionate about the unique characteristics of creating a business is underrated by many. The desire to create something useful, something new and dedicate one's self to something others haven't tried are passions in themselves, despite what industry they take place in.

We originally didn't really have a niche when we changed from The Pokemon World to Petalburg Woods. There used to be a ROM hacking niche on the site, but that was long abandoned. We're going with RP for our new niche since that's what I understand most and with one of our large scale RPGs being a significant part of the forums, it makes sense to use it as our niche.

You can search niche websites like this

" intitle:"keyword" inurl:forum/viewtopic.php "

Well, originally started up mine when I started going on another forum (that is long gone sadly). They had a lovely role playing section, so obviously I had one too. At one point was the main feature, since well I LOVE role playing. Though its now turned into a discussion and role playing forum.
