When I was 12 or 13, I would use the official Sims 2 Bulletin Boards (not PB) to download new lots and custom content. There was a section where fansites could advertise, and one that caught my attention happened to be hosted on ProBoards. I joined and made friends there, and eventually ended up on ProBoards Support and Slightly Insane where I made more friends. This was ca. 2007.
Then I got into making themes. Then I got into making themes for other people. After a while, I got pretty good at that and settled into a nice little niche as a theme maker and coder. I like helping people and having unique knowledge, so that's the biggest reason I stick around. It's not profitable or anything, just a hobby.
I've tried vBulletin, phpBB, MyBB, Vanilla, and some others. But never really found the same sense of community that I feel on PB.
