How did you get your forum active?

I had a lot of friends from one forum that shut down and another forum that eats the diaper so I had members ready to join from the beginning, now we get a few more that the original members invite but that's it.

Never heard of that expression before. Is that like saying that something bit the dust (not working properly or not working out at all?)

Team effort, just have bunch of people help you.
Post original and fresh content.
Post reviews.
Be dedicated.
Use a good web host so your forums load fast.
Sometimes less stuff on the forums is better than too much stuff.

I spent a year advertising and promoting my forum like a mofo, did not sleep, drank as much red bull as I could afford and watched the forum grow.

Word of mouth is my main strategy. Especially now that I am working on more exclusive niches, that's pretty much my main focus.

Alternative to PM advertising:

Get MSN/Skype ID, invite over IM.

It works unless they don't want to join.

Get some of your mights to join up and post, keep posting new content in the sections so members can join up and get straight to posting and not create all the content for you.
