Something to note is that changing your username or online status is an event which used to get fanned out to all the other people in guilds you were in lol
Events like that tended to vastly outnumber the actual message events.
I've seen guilds get throttled by the administrators due to there being too many users and being forced to kick users out of guilds so it wouldn't lag really bad and it went on for quite a long time.
