Well my forum has been open long enough now, have done lotsa banners for ppl but still have bugger all users, bit depressing. How do I get more ppl to register, i tend to get lots of guests but they dont reg up, annoying. The users that I currently have are really only ppl i know lol..sad

I am having the same dilemma! My members are made up of people I know from another similar site. I managed to get 22 people on my site today at one time, but no new members! 😳

Promoting your forum
The best way is to promote it without spamming it. Sign up to advertising forums and promote it in you signature and in the advertising forum. Also ensure that you bump your topics WITHOUT breaking rules. Sign up for other forums as well that interest you and add it to your signature and post a few times. Affiliates don't bring in many visitors but it is still worth a go. If you spam your site your site will be given a bad name and people won't sign up. Alot of people are on more then one forum and if you spam it on one forum then it might be brought up on another forum and would reduce the number of people from that forum signing up as well as the form they spammed on.
First impressions
First impressions is everything. This usually persuades people to sign up. If it looks like hardly any work has gone into it then no one will sign up. Also try to make your forum unique. If it is the same as many others then it will be hard to get members. Would you rather sign up at a site with 4 members or 400? You need something special to get people to sign up at your like more to talk about, competitions and a more friendly community. If your members constantly argue and fight with each other then they would maybe choose a similar forum instead as it would be more friendlier. If your forum looks empty start loads of topics to get some discussions started. This will give users more to talk about, make your forum look more active and it will help persuade the quieter people to maybe get more active.

Google, yahoo and Msn are the main search engines. They don't bring in traffic unless you are top or nearly top of your key words. Your ranking is done by the numbers of sites that link to you. Affiliates don't count. Only text links. Submit using a site like http://www.submitexpress.com or http://www.allsitecafe.com/submitter/submit.html . You get a much better ranking if you have a proper domain like http://www.yourforum.com then if you have a sub domain. Also some hosts reduce your chance of a good ranking as freeforums for on have not install the search engine friendly links mod which means that all links are link http://www.yourforum.com/index?t=577&si ... f448cf79f3
The sid or session id makes your site less search engine bot friendly but there is nothing you can do if you are with a free host. It also takes a long time normally for bots to index your site although this site has indexed quite quickly... Less then a week. ~smile~ .
Paid advertising
Google ads etc can help improve traffic HOWEVER they can cost alot. Many sites encourage users to click ads to make that site owner some money. Meaning that you may get loads of clicks but quite a few would be through people with no interest in your site. They just want to make there site some money. It is not really a good way unless you are really desperate.
