My mom is getting older and I feel that so that I have a place to live, I'd like to have residence live at.

I go to a program where I have a counselor, and I see a psychiatrist 2x/month and a therapist 1x/week.

I know the therapist and the counselor from program can help.

One problem I know is mom would not approve of me going into a community residence / group home, but I feel it's important to me not only to have a residence, but to help foster my independence.

What can I do? Where do I begin?

Begin with your therapist they usually know of places like this, watch out for what you take for granted though..

Well I finally got the courage to speak to my program counselor today about my wanting to move into a Community Residence, and it's tentative that she may submit an application for me to live in a young adult community residence (I say tentative because I'm unsure if she submitted an application).

She tells me not to worry and we will work out all the "kinks" when the arise (even mom's concerns).

I'm really glad I brought it up to her, so eventually, I will be living in a community residence.

I'm proud of you for getting up the courage to ask your counselor about that. Hopefully it all will work out for you! Good luck and keep us posted bud!

Here in the UK, support workers try to encourage independent living or warden based housing and will go through a program of training to assess your capabilities and weaknesses with things like money management, health and hygiene, cooking, cleaning and food shopping skills.
It's amazing to see these young people with all sorts of different mental and physical health difficulties living independently, working and having social and physical relationships, everyone deserves to live a happy normal life. I wish you well in your quest 🙂
